Today, we celebrate the birthday of our founder, Miriam Jiménez Román. She left us with an abundance of wisdom, and today we’re sharing a powerful quote from her:

"So many of us that grew up in that time were attracted by the civil rights movement and Black Power, by Malcolm and all of this stuff—is because it gave us a language... It gave us a history. It gave us an understanding that it wasn’t an individual thing but it was a systemic problem. And that made it much easier for me to breathe. It really was like being able to breathe..."

Honoring a legacy, centering the future.

Our friends at the Program in Africana Studies of Bryn Mawr College invite you to the Second Annual Miriam Jiménez Román Memorial Lecture in Afro-Latinx Studies.

This year the guest is Dr. Melanie Y. White who will take us on a profound exploration of “Sovereign Mosquitia.” Dr. White will dive into how Black and Afro-Indigenous women on the Miskitu Coast use art and “intimate sovereignty” to refuse colonial violence and reclaim their autonomy.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 18th
TIME: 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM
WHERE: Quita Woodward Room (1st Floor, Old Library), Bryn Mawr College
