The kids in Prospect Afterschool recently got a taste of Hispanic Heritage Month by making their own empanadas! 🥟

Empanadas are enjoyed across Latin America, with different countries and regions putting their own spin on the fillings, dough, and preparation. During the activity, kids practiced their cooking skills while learning about the food traditions that are part of Hispanic and Latino cultures.

A delicious way to explore culture through cooking! 🌎

Fall flavors were on the menu during a recent Autumn Baking workshop led by Chef Jayda! 🍎🎃🍁

Graduates of the Culinary Center at Allie’s Place 60-Hour Culinary Training Program returned to the kitchen to make brown butter maple pumpkin cookies, pumpkin cheesecake, classic apple crisp, pumpkin crème brûlée, and Granny Smith apple crumb cake.

Throughout the workshop, students built on their baking skills while exploring seasonal ingredients and how to make the most of produce at its peak. They practiced techniques including browning butter, preparing different batters and fillings, and creating a variety of textures and flavors. As with every culinary class, food safety, sanitation, and maintaining a clean workspace were also part of the process.

Science was in the air at Williamsbridge!🚀

During a recent visit from Mad Science, families explored the science of air through different experiments. They learned about air pressure and airflow as they kept a ping-pong ball suspended above a hair dryer, launched mini foam rockets, experimented with balloons, and more.🎈

Through each activity, families got to see some of the science behind how air moves, creates pressure, and can even make objects fly!

Prospect Afterschool checked off a few fall favorites with a trip to Outhouse Orchards! 🍎🍂

The kids spent the day outdoors enjoying the fall weather as they made their way through the corn maze, bounced on the giant jump pad, hopped on the tractor hay wagon for a ride around the orchard, and filled their bags with freshly picked apples. 🚜🍏

During a recent resident-led workshop, a Clinton mom shared her creative skills with families, showing them how to give old denim a new life. ✂️👖

Parents and kids used pieces of jeans, patches, felt, rhinestones, and other materials to create their own personalized pins, accessories, and designs. Everyone put their own spin on their projects, with creations ranging from an ocean-themed patch to a mini denim purse made using the seam of a pair of jeans as the strap.

The workshop was the first in a new monthly series at Clinton, giving residents the opportunity to share their own skills, hobbies, and talents with other families in the building.

A little to one of our summer day campers’ favorite activities: swimming! 🏊🏽‍♀️ 🏊🏿‍♂️

This summer, the day campers at Saratoga headed to Saf-T-Swim Of New Hyde Park for weekly swim lessons, where they practiced water safety and built their skills in the pool. 🛟 They worked on everything from floating on their backs to different swimming strokes, followed by free swim time with their friends.

Swimming is an important life skill, and over the course of the summer, the kids became more comfortable and confident in the water. Some learned to swim for the first time, while others strengthened the skills they already had!

Belongó is bringing the beat to Williamsbridge! 🥁🎶

Through Afro-Latin percussion classes, they are introducing families at Williamsbridge to music and rhythms from across the Americas, rooted in African and Indigenous traditions.

During a recent class, families explored the music of Cuba, learning about and playing traditional percussion instruments, including the güiro and guayo. They practiced different techniques, explored the sounds and rhythms of each instrument, and played together as a group.

Graduates of the 60-Hour Culinary Training Program at the Culinary Center at Allie’s Place can continue building their skills through advanced culinary workshops focused on specialized techniques, cuisines, and real-world kitchen experience.

During a recent Line Cook 101 workshop, students practiced preparing ingredients quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Working in larger batches helped simulate the pace and volume of a professional kitchen while giving them hands-on experience with the organization, preparation, and teamwork required of a line cook.

These advanced workshops give grads more opportunities to prepare for careers in the food service industry and beyond.

We capped off another summer with our annual end-of-summer Carnival!🎪

After a season filled with field trips, swim lessons, music, STEM, and plenty of new experiences, campers from the HFH Summer Day Camps at Allie’s Place, Prospect, and Saratoga came together at Hempstead Lake State Park for one last celebration, with families from Williamsbridge and Clinton joining the fun.

Thanks to our partners at , the day was packed with carnival games and prizes, face painting, arts and crafts, a magic show, plenty of treats, and a new addition this year—a ride on the park’s carousel!🎠

Campers also had the chance to show off what they learned during their weekly music classes with , coming together for a special Afro-Latin percussion performance for their fellow campers and families.🪘
