The holiday of Shavuot celebrates the anniversary of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. 📖

Originating as an agricultural festival, it also celebrates the first harvest of wheat in the land of Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people. 🌾

The holiday is a time of learning, reflection, and community and is celebrated by late night Torah learning, hearing the reading of the ten commandments in synagogue, and feasting on dairy foods! 🍰

Wishing you a day filled with celebration, meaning and connection. ✡️

On this day in the Hebrew Calendar in 1967, the Old City of Jerusalem was liberated, reunifying the eternal capital of the Jewish people.

The day is marked as a day of joy and celebration on which Jews were once again allowed to go to the Western Wall and come together at the holiest place for the Jewish people.

On that day, soldiers across all religious denominations recognized the importance of the city's unification and the significance of the event for the Jewish people. Motta Gur, the commander who led the soldiers into Jerusalem broadcasted this operation over the radio. He said:

“We are sitting on the ridge overlooking ancient Jerusalem. Soon, we are about to go into it. The old city of Jerusalem, which since all generations [Jews] dreamed about and yearned for—we will be the first to enter it. The Jewish nation is awaiting our victory. Am Yisrael—the Jewish people—is waiting for this historic moment. Be proud of yourself, and good luck. Move, move, move to the gate. We will have a roll call on the square at the top [Temple Mount].”

Jerusalem Day is commemorated as a national holiday in Israel and is recognized today as a symbol of hope and unity for Jews across the world.

At 6:11 PM on May 14, 1948, President Harry Truman made history by recognizing the State of Israel just minutes after its declaration of independence — affirming America’s support at a pivotal moment in Jewish history.

Today, on Declaration Day, we honor that extraordinary legacy and the enduring bond between the United States and Israel.

Read AZM President Mark Levenson’s powerful Jerusalem Post op-ed on why Declaration Day still matters today. https://www.jpost.com/opinion/article-895677
