Thanks to Kulanu's support, Jewish voices are now reaching the airwaves across the continent. This recent broadcast from Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire is one of several Kulanu has funded in communities across the continent, carrying Torah, Jewish life and the stories of our communities to listeners who have never heard them before.

Radio reaches where the internet cannot, into homes, villages and islands, connecting scattered Jewish communities and sharing our presence with the wider world. Every broadcast is a reminder that the Jewish people of Africa are here, proud and growing.

These are the seeds of something lasting, and we are proud of every community this program has already reached.

“In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth.”—Beresh*t 1:1

These opening words remind us that every beginning carries the promise of something beautiful. No matter what yesterday held, Hashem gives us the opportunity to begin anew—with renewed hope, stronger faith, greater compassion, and a commitment to bringing more light into our homes, our communities, and our world.

As we begin the Torah anew, may we also renew ourselves—and remember that with Hashem, every ending can become the doorway to a beautiful beginning. May this new beginning bring us a year filled with abundant blessings, renewed opportunities, and the courage to create a brighter tomorrow.

As the sacred day of Hoshana Rabbah draws to a close and we welcome the holiness of Shabbat, may we carry into this peaceful evening the prayers we have lifted, the hopes we have renewed, and the blessings we have sought from Hashem.

And as we rest from the labors of the week, may Hashem grant us peace in our homes, unity in our communities, protection in our journeys, and the courage to keep choosing kindness, compassion, and hope.

May the prayers of Hoshana Rabbah find their answer in lives filled with goodness, and may the peace of Shabbat reach every Jewish home, from America to Israel and across the world.

The Changing Face of Jewish Africa: Documentary Filmmaking at UPenn

Join us for a special conversation with University of Pennsylvania professors Peter Decherney and Sara Byala about their work taking Jewish and non-Jewish university undergraduates to document Jewish communities across Africa.

Through the Penn Global Documentary Institute, which runs summer research expeditions, as well as travel embedded in semester-long classes, Peter and Sara have taken more than forty students with them to film, photograph, and collect oral histories in Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. In these immersive fieldwork projects, students serve as research assistants and film crew members. Through photographs, film clips, and firsthand accounts, Peter and Sara will discuss the histories of these communities as well as their methods for partnering with them to document and amplify their stories.

As we continue through the beautiful festival of Sukkot, may the waving of the lulav and etrog fill our hearts with gratitude, faith, and unity, and may our time dwelling in the sukkah remind us of the blessings of community, hospitality, and our dependence on Hashem.

May every sukkah become a place of joy, peace, prayer, and togetherness, bringing families and communities closer and reminding us that even in temporary dwellings, we can find lasting hope and blessing.
