Twenty-five years ago today, our world fractured. On September 11, 2001, I was a 24-year-old officer on housing patrol in Spanish Harlem when the call came. Arriving at the World Trade Center, it looked like a nuclear blast site from a post-apocalyptic film.
What followed were relentless months on the pile. We worked round-the-clock shifts at Ground Zero, our navy blue uniforms bleached white by pulverized concrete, ash, and toxic sludge. With no N95 masks, we tied our undershirts around our faces just to breathe.
Nothing prepares a first responder for hearing desperate cries for help echoing from beneath burning, twisted steel—voices you can hear, but souls you cannot reach. In Greek, my name, Iasonas, means healer or helper. My mother knew that when I was born, yet standing over that burning rubble, the inability to save them brought an agonizing helplessness. As rescue painfully turned to recovery and cleanup, our duty remained sacred: sifting the wreckage so grieving families could have answers.
Today, as in every anniversary the past 25 years, I pay solemn homage to my fallen brothers and sisters across the NYPD, FDNY, sanitation, and every service who answered the call, and the dozens of colleagues who never made it home.
This day also marks a deeply personal sorrow: the 2015 sunset of my mother, Ilene—my best friend and life advisor—called to the heavenly realm to watch over the meek and protect the weak. Yet the end is never final; the Alpha and Omega holds no boundaries, only rebirth into something stronger.
Let this anniversary reach the intrinsic depths of your soul. The person we casually criticize might be standing one step from the edge of oblivion; a kind word or wise counsel can pull them back. Do unto others as you would have done to you.
When evil struck 25 years ago, humanity stood together in unprecedented unity. In a divided world, we need that harmony again. Honor the fallen by choosing compassion over malice, and by being true guardians for one another. As this is our tenants brotherly love, relief and truth 🌿
Some of us vowed to I am a keeper of that vow! 👮🕵️😇
