SR. BETH SPIRIT AWARD
At just 20 years old, Ariana Barrios embodies the transformative power of music to inspire, heal, and connect. A student at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Ariana is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music education with a passion for sharing the gift of music with the next generation.

Ariana has been part of Songcatchers since she was four years old. As she grew within the organization, Songcatchers became more than a place to learn music—it became a community where she discovered her own voice as a leader and educator. She began volunteering and working with Songcatchers the summer before her senior year of high school and has continued to dedicate herself to its mission ever since.

Raised by a single mother, Ariana learned early the importance of resilience, determination, and support. Her mother’s encouragement inspired her to overcome challenges and, in turn, help others find strength and confidence through music.

Since her freshman year of college, Ariana has served as Songcatchers’ Orchestra Director while continuing as an Early Childhood Violin Instructor. She leads rehearsals and performances for young musicians, helping students develop not only their musical abilities but also their confidence, teamwork, and sense of community.

During the summer, Ariana also supervises high school-aged counselors who volunteer in Songcatchers’ music programs for children ages 3 to 13. Her commitment to creating a welcoming environment for her students is at the heart of her teaching philosophy. “Establishing a community with my students and classroom is one of my biggest goals,” she says.

Ariana plans to continue her education and expand her impact as a music educator. For her, teaching is more than a career—it is a calling. “I feel like not many people are inclined to go into a music degree,” she says. “I can’t see myself doing anything else except teaching.”

Ariana’s gentle, nurturing spirit with children reflects the legacy of Sr. Beth, carrying forward the compassion, patience, and love that defined her approach to music education and so beautifully embodying her spirit. We think Sr. Beth would be over the moon about Ariana continuing her legacy and Ariana's love of teaching.

MEET OUR HONOREE
Francisco J. NĂșñez

A MacArthur Fellow and Musical America’s 2018 Educator of the Year, Francisco is a composer, conductor, director, visionary, leading figure in music education, and the Artistic Director/Founder of Young People’s Chorus of New York (YPC). Since he founded YPC, NĂșñez has established recognition among composers of the child’s voice as a significant instrument for making music.

NĂșñez has greatly extended and invigorated the repertoire for young voices by commissioning hundreds of pieces of music from many of today’s most distinguished, established and emerging composers, greatly contributing to the ever-evolving fabric of music in the 21st century. As a composer himself, NĂșñez wrote his first choral work, Misa Pequeña, at age 15, winning early acclaim for seamlessly fusing a wide gamut of cultures and musical idioms. Today, he composes countless compositions and arrangements in all musical formats and styles, from classical to pop, commissioned from him for choirs, orchestras, and solo instruments.

In recent years, NĂșñez has also ventured into film. In 2023, he received an EmmyÂź Award for Artistic Direction of the feature-length holiday special Topsy Turvy New York. The year prior, NĂșñez won an EmmyÂź Award for Holiday Jingles, a holiday commercial he composed for WNJU Telemundo 47. His latest film, This Time Round, has been featured in film festivals across the country and has earned several awards including "Best Producer" at the Toronto Indie Filmmakers Festival and "Best Soundtrack" at the New York International Film Awards. The soundtrack to the film is available on limited-edition vinyl and all major digital platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

Additionally, NĂșñez is the brainchild and host of Out of the Vox, an insightful new YPC Short Film Series that takes viewers off the stage with NĂșñez as he journeys into casual settings and engages in meaningful conversation with some of the world’s most accomplished artists.

Among Mr. NĂșñez’s many awards and honors are an ASCAP Victor Herbert Award and the New York Choral Society’s Choral Excellence Award. Hispanic Business magazine named him one of 100 Most Influential Hispanics, ABC-TV named him as a “Person of the Week, and Fox News profiled him “for “changing young lives with music.” Musical America Worldwide named him among 30 “Influencers” for his contributions to the music industry; Bang on a Can presented him with its Visionary Award for making the commissioning of new music a key part of the YPC mission; NYU Steinhardt honored him with its Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award; and both Ithaca College and Gettysburg College have presented him with honorary Doctor of Music degrees.

Meet Our Brunch Gala Honoree: Frank Di Marco

Legacy of Board Service Award

Frank P. DiMarco is being honored for his decades of dedicated service to Songcatchers, Inc., having served as a Board Director from the organization’s founding through 2026. His longstanding commitment to Songcatchers reflects a deep devotion to community, service, and the belief that organizations like Songcatchers make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families.

A lifelong New Rochelle resident and respected attorney, Frank retired on April 30, 2025, following an extraordinary 54-year legal career. A graduate of The Bronx High School of Science, the City College of New York, and New York Law School, he established his private practice in 1986 after working with a Manhattan law firm. Throughout his career, he and his wife, Carmelina, who served as his legal assistant, built a legacy of professional dedication and community involvement.

Frank’s public service spans numerous organizations, including the New Rochelle Bar Association, the Columbian Lawyers Association of Westchester County, the New Rochelle YMCA, and the New Rochelle Human Rights Commission. He also served for 34 years as a Commissioner of the Board of Assessment Review and has held leadership positions with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Residence Park Neighborhood Association.

His many honors include the Westchester County Clerk’s Distinguished Service Award, the New Rochelle YMCA Joseph Charla Award, and numerous commendations and proclamations from local, county, state, and federal officials.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Frank has devoted himself to his faith and family. He serves as a Trustee and has been a Lector at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle. He and Carmelina have three children, Frank, Paul, and Elena, and four grandchildren.

Songcatchers is proud to recognize Frank P. DiMarco for his extraordinary years of board service, steadfast commitment, and enduring contributions to our organization and the New Rochelle community. His legacy of service exemplifies the spirit of giving that has sustained Songcatchers for generations.
