A big win for the French Quarter! The City Planning Commission rejected a proposal to expand short-term rentals in the neighborhood. Thank you to everyone who came out or sent letters in support of protecting the Quarter’s residential community.

This decision recognizes what residents and advocates have long known: the French Quarter’s economic value is rooted in its identity as a living, breathing, dynamic neighborhood.

Next stop: City Council. Please urge councilmembers to uphold the CPC’s recommendation and protect the people who make the Quarter home.

The commission stopped short of expanding the areas of the French Quarter where short-term rentals are permitted.

One of this year’s New Orleans Nine is already getting some much-needed attention.

Pete Fountain’s childhood home on North White Street is where the legendary New Orleans clarinetist first picked up the instrument at age nine and where his unmistakable New Orleans sound began. Today, the house sits vacant and neglected, but Pete’s family, neighbors, and preservation advocates are hoping its story is far from over.

Thank you to FOX 8’s Rob Masson for shining a light on this important piece of New Orleans music history and the effort to save it.

Preservationists are working to save New Orleans clarinetist Pete Fountain’s boyhood Mid-City home, now considered one of the city’s most endangered historic sites.

Presenting the 2026 New Orleans' Nine Most Endangered List.

Modeled on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's listing of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, the New Orleans’ Nine was inaugurated by Louisiana Landmarks Society in 2005. The list aims to save historic sites and facilities that may be threatened by demolition, neglect, or bureaucracy. Through an annual announcement the Society seeks to gain publicity for endangered places, to advocate for sound preservation policies, and to educate the public that the loss of these resources would diminish the community.

“The New Orleans 9 is not simply a list of endangered buildings,” said Michael Duplantier, Chair of this year’s New Orleans 9 Most Endangered Committee. “It is a call to recognize the places, neighborhoods, and public processes that make New Orleans irreplaceable. By spotlighting these threats, we hope to build the public awareness and support needed to protect the places and processes at risk.”

The naming of the New Orleans’ Nine follows a citywide call for nominations from individuals, neighborhood associations, and historic and architectural organizations. The final choices are based upon selection criteria such as historic, architectural, civic and cultural value, the severity of the threat, and the degree of community commitment to save the property.

Madame John's Legacy is one of Louisiana's last, best witnesses to early Creole New Orleans, and the recent alterations have reminded us how easily that heritage can be compromised. Louisiana Landmarks Society is committed to a restoration that honors the building's authentic character, so that the Landmark remains a place where our shared past is preserved with dignity and care.

One of the oldest buildings in the New Orleans French Quarter and a rare surviving example of French Colonial architecture is at the center of a years long dispute between local preservationists and the state, nearly three years after the two sides thought they'd worked out a compromise.
