Louisiana Landmarks Society Louisiana Landmarks Society—a non-profit 501(c)3 preservation advocacy organization founded in 1950

Louisiana Landmarks Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 preservation advocacy organization established in 1950. With founders such as Samuel Wilson, Jr., and Martha Robinson, Landmarks rapidly defined preservation advocacy in New Orleans by leading the charge to preserve Gallier Hall in 1950 and defeat the proposed Riverfront Expressway a decade later. Today, the spirit of the organization’s founders

lives on in Landmarks’ annual “New Orleans’ Nine Most Endangered” listing of at-risk historic properties. Landmarks’ preservation activities restored the c. 1799 Pitot House to its Creole West Indies colonial charm and current use as a site for preservation education. Publications on historic architecture and preservation are available for purchase at the Pitot House gift shop. Focusing their efforts to the New Orleans area, Landmarks' mission is to promote historic preservation through education, advocacy and operation of the Pitot House.

A plan to demolish the iconic Ted’s Frostop diner and replace it with apartments for Tulane University students hit a potentially major snag Wednesday, when the Historic District Landmark Commission unanimously recommended denying the developers' request for a demolition permit.

The unanimous vote means the diner's demolition will require City Council approval.

Last night, neighbors packed Ted’s Frostop to voice real concern about the proposed demolition and redevelopment of this longtime community landmark. The message was clear: this place matters.

There is still time to be heard. Submit comments to the HDLC by 4:00 PM today, or attend the public meeting tomorrow at 1:00 PM in City Council Chambers.

You can also sign the petition to HDLC here: https://www.change.org/p/ask-the-hdlc-to-deny-the-demolition-of-ted-s-frostop-in-new-orleans

Monday's meeting at Ted's Frostop follows the announcement that Ted's Frostop would be transformed into an apartment complex for Tulane University.

CALL TO ACTION: Sign the Petition to oppose demolition of this beloved neighborhood landmark operating since the 1950s!
Also EMAIL HDLC at [email protected] opposing the demolition.

• No community engagement conducted prior to the project's announcement
•The development is grossly out of scale with the HU-RS single-family neighborhood
• Serious pedestrian safety risks on S. Claiborne Avenue have not been studied
• Only 37 parking spaces are planned for 160 residents — traffic and parking impacts have not been assessed
•Sets a dangerous precedent for Tulane University’s expansion across Claiborne Avenue into historic residential neighborhoods

Ask the HDLC to deny the demolition of Ted's Frostop in New Orleans
