In October 1944, General Douglas MacArthur walked out from a Higgins landing craft and waded ashore on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Shortly after the dramatic landing, he addressed the Filipino people by radio and announced that he fulfilled his promise to return as a liberator. In this image from our Digital Collections, dated October 21, 1944, MacArthur and Major General Verne D. Mudge are shown on Leyte with soldiers gathered behind them.

Happy birthday to WWII veteran and dear friend Steve Ellis, who turns 102 today! A New Orleans native, Ellis went on active duty as an Ensign in the US Navy in July 1943 and deployed to the Pacific theater aboard LST-751 as a gunnery officer, later becoming executive officer. He took part in the invasions of Borneo, Leyte, and Luzon. After being released from active duty in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, he obtained a law degree and became a judge, spending much of his career on the Louisiana Appeals Court. We are so grateful for his service and for the time he dedicates to this Museum as a Volunteer. Please join us in wishing Mr. Ellis a very happy birthday!

Thursday night we were honored to hold a special screening of the new Netflix film ‘The Mosquito Bowl,’ where guests heard from actors Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis, director Peter Berg, and author Buzz Bissinger during a special talkback after the movie. During their visit to the Museum, the cast and crew also explored the Road to Tokyo exhibit, which highlights the Pacific war. See ‘The Mosquito Bowl’ in theaters starting October 30.
