We can't thank journalist and New Orleans Pelicans star C.J. McCollum enough for reaching out to our program because he cares about young, local BIPOC voices. Here he is in an interview with JRNOLA alum Phil Petty III.

This story was produced as part of our ongoing partnership with JRNOLA, a local non-profit which mentors under-represented youth in the field of journalism, particularly women and people of color.

We are so, so immensely proud of our 9th grader Vaishnavi Kumbala, who just got published in Teen Vogue (arguably one of the most coveted publications out there) for her excellent reporting on teens displaced by Hurricane Ida.

She interviewed teens who recently immigrated to the US via translator—that's tough stuff, even for seasoned journalists. Congrats, Vaishnavi!

Hurricane season is getting longer and more intense each year.

Registration for our Virtual Summer Interview Camp is now LIVE!

Join JRNOLA for another summer full of mystery guests (i.e., pretty famous grown-ups that you get to ask any questions you want) in our physically distant interview camp. We’ll interview activists, chefs, actors, musicians, authors, and even Saints and Pelicans players, as well as the journalists who report on those beats.

Learn how to ask a great question, and have fun in the process.

Thanks to for taking time to speak with Team Lede last Thursday about their work with , which trains and supports emerging high school journalists in New Orleans. We're profiling Jay Evans as part of our Lede Voices series highlighting young creators and changemakers of color in New Orleans.

Our focus this season is on K-12 student leaders, educators and youth support workers in our community. Know someone we should talk to? DM us with a tip!

Phillip Petty III is a newly minted 18-year-old, and is a senior at St. Augustine High School. Phil has been with JRNOLA since 2018, and misses being at Saints games. Some of his favorite moments happened that year, taking photos from the sidelines for the first time, and meeting ESPN professionals.

Phil's itching to graduate and get out into the world. Though JRNOLA is sad to lose a great journalist, Loyola University will be lucky to get a new accounting student next year (and we are so grateful he's staying in town!). At the start of last school year, he wrote a [great piece](https://buff.ly/3nSy1D6) (his favorite!) about whether or not schools would be able to get back to in person learning—most are still virtual part of the time. Keep up with Phil's work, and all our other great writers at https://buff.ly/3hcQAAH.

JRNOLA is celebrating many things today. GiveNOLA Day, Taylor's graduation, and Jay's birthday! For Jay's 29th, they're raising money on behalf of our program. To honor 29 years of life, they're asking folks to contribute $2, $9, or $29.

Every dollar counts toward sustaining equitable media, advocating for youth voices, and providing young journalists PAID publishing opportunities.

Storyteller Spotlight: Kerry is a writer, film director, and editor currently attending The Living School. When he isn't skateboarding or attempting to convince everyone that Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed is the best movie ever, Kerry is refining his voice as a storyteller while keeping everyone laughing in the process.

Kerry recently won a Founders Circle Award at the 2021 Film Prize Junior Student Film Festival for his film "Life Isn't Good."

These journalists took over Gambit's Spring Fashion Issue and tackled articles about gender-fluid fashion, sustainable clothing and Black-owned clothing lines. They also got to model locally owned clothing brands! Giving to JRNOLA will help us continue connecting NOLA teens to paid publishing opportunities with our partners.
