Juneteenth commerates the end of slavery in the United States by marking the day in 1865 when ensalved African Americans were informered they were free. This came over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day's weight was cemented in US history when it was officially signed as a federal holiday in 2021.

During our assessment days, children come in to our office on a set schedule, every six months or annually, to check on their academic progress and general well-being. Their visits are about more than evaluation though, they’re an opportunity to provide support.

Thank you again to all our amazing mentors that joined us last week at our annual mentor appreciation luncheon!

This year we had the pleasure of honoring Miguel as Fostering Success' Academic Mentor of the Year. Miguel has been tutoring with us since 2017, and teaching for 32 years including 10 years in Puerto Rico. He feels honored to use his family's experience with foster care and adoption systems to advocate for our community's most vulnerable youth.

What does the research say about academic mentoring? Aside from just the numbers, programs that combine academic tutoring with supportive relationships consistently outperform those focused on content alone. Attitudes toward school also improve as the students develop more positive perceptions of their teachers and education. When students feel supported by a caring adult, they are more motivated to engage in school.
