Monday morning, Civilian Corrections Assistant Cassi Taylor lost her life in a vehicle crash in Brevard County. Cassi joined the agency on July 20, 2026, and was scheduled to be officially sworn in yesterday. She is the daughter of Deputy Scott Burke.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.

We are saddened to share the news of the death of one of our newest team members.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Civilian Corrections Assistant Cassi Taylor lost her life in a vehicle crash in Brevard County. Cassi joined our agency on July 20, 2026, and was scheduled to be officially sworn in yesterday. She is the daughter of Deputy Scott Burke, who many of you may know from community events.

Lieutenant Marc Weiss from Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District died in the line of duty on September 1, 2020 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Sergeant Daniel Watts from the City of Jacksonville Beach Police Department died on September 1, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Police Officer Adam Webb from Daytona Beach Police Department died on September 1, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Correctional Officer Trainee Whitney Cloud from Florida Department of Corrections was killed on August 28, 2021 as the result of an accidental discharge while conducting fi****ms training at the Harry K. Singletary Training Academy in the Wakulla Correctional Institute.

Trooper Sean Hryc from Florida Highway Patrol died on August 28, 2021 as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty while assigned to Troop I in Ocala, Florida.

Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson from Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Flight Crew was killed on August 28. 2023 when the Eurocopter aircraft he was aboard sustained an in-flight emergency and crashed into a small apartment.

Police Officer Michael Weiskopf from St. Petersburg Police Department (FL) died on August 27, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Engineer James Hall from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (FL) passed away on August 27, 2024 after suffering a medical emergency.

Deputy First Class Paul Luciano from Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FL) died on August 26, 2021 from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while performing his duties at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.

Remembering the ones we have honored during our past rides:

On August 25, 2020, SGI Fire Department (FL) Firefighter/First Responder Brian Stephen Smith and other fire department personnel, responded to a call of a water rescue on the beach. Firefighter/First Responder Smith went into the water to rescue a man and a juvenile and got swept up by the current. He was rescued from the water and immediately taken to the Weems Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Deputy Sheriff Michael Webb from Osceola County Sheriff's Office (FL) died on August 25, 2021 as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Deputy First Class Douglas Clark from Manatee County Sheriff's Office (FL) died on August 25, 2021 from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.
