✨ Member Spotlight: Cynthy Payne ✨

At 90 years young, Cynthy Payne is a shining example of what it means to thrive, not just survive, as we age. Physical activity has been part of Cynthy’s life since she was a teenager, when she first began ballet. That lifelong commitment to movement and wellness continues today as a very active member of Baker Senior Center Naples.

Cynthy participates in our high-intensity exercise classes, enjoys card games with fellow members, and has built meaningful social connections through our community after the loss of her husband three years ago. Her active lifestyle doesn’t stop there, Cynthy also plays tennis and walks 4 miles four times a week! Her strength, resilience, and positive spirit inspire everyone around her!

Are you Caring for Someone Living with Dementia?

The Brookdale Dementia Respite Program at Baker Senior Center Naples is currently accepting clients diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia. Our program is facilitated by credentialed social workers and music therapists who focus on:

Language skills
Reducing anxiety and agitation
Reminiscence and socialization
Building self-esteem
Overall cognitive support

Each session features a unique and engaging theme designed to support clients while giving caregivers valuable time to attend to personal responsibilities. Caregivers also have access to support and therapy groups led by licensed clinical social workers. Sessions are available Monday through Friday, 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Clients may attend up to three groups per week. For more information, contact Riley Costanzo at 239-325-4444.

Collier County Commissioner Rick LoCastro Speaks with Veterans at Baker Senior Center Naples’ “Veterans in Paradise” Meeting!

Rick LoCastro, Colonel, U.S. Air Force (Retired), presented “Air Force One & Other Military Experiences – My Time Behind The Scenes,” sharing fascinating stories from his experiences with President George W. Bush, Nancy Reagan, and General Norman Schwarzkopf.

Commissioner LoCastro also provided an update on the new Veterans’ Nursing Home being developed in Collier County and discussed important ways Veterans can prepare for health emergencies.

Thank you, Commissioner LoCastro, for giving our Veterans such a meaningful, informative, and entertaining presentation!

🌎✈️ Travelogue: Pyramids, Pupusas & Chicken Buses! 🚌🌴

Jim Sernovitz, volunteer at Baker Senior Center Naples, took members on an unforgettable journey through Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize with his spectacular photos and stories! Traveling by air, boat, and the infamous “chicken bus,” members experienced the beauty, culture, and daily life of these incredible countries while exploring giant pyramids and ancient Mayan cities.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight – Mario Cardamone 🌟

Mario Cardamone was inspired to volunteer at Baker Senior Center Naples after becoming a full-time Florida resident and a friend suggested that he become involved in our center. Mario’s participation as a member grew into volunteering. Today, Mario generously gives his time assisting with Rock Steady Boxing, cooking classes, the food pantry, serving lunch and delivering meals to Lulu’s Kitchen! When asked what he gains from volunteering, Mario shared that “volunteering is a welcome change from his daily routine and has allowed him to build many new social connections.”

Do you love Mahjong and enjoy sharing your skills with others? Baker Senior Center Naples is looking for a volunteer to teach Mahjong to members at all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned players. Mahjong is one of the fastest-growing games in the U.S., and interest is booming in our community. This is a great opportunity to give back, connect with others, and make a meaningful impact while doing something you enjoy. Members, volunteers, and staff dressed for the occasion celebrating Kentucky Derby Week during this week’s luncheon. Prior to the festivities, members enjoyed a special crafts class where they designed their own unique Derby hats!

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT – LUCIA DILLARD! 🌟

Lucia Dillard is a dedicated volunteer at Baker Senior Center Naples who plays an important role in many of our programs. From serving members at our weekly luncheons to assisting in the office, art programs, and cooking classes, and restocking BSCN’s Cyber Café, Lucia’s commitment shines through in everything she does. Lucia first discovered the center through her mom, Fran Gagliardi, who was a member and discovered a passion for crochet at the age of 80! Seeing the positive impact the center had on her mom’s life inspired Lucia to give back after her mom passed away. In Lucia’s own words, “I get so much more than I give from volunteering, such as building friendships and gaining a sense of purpose.”

We are grateful for all that Lucia does to make Baker Senior Center Naples a welcoming and enjoyable place for our members!

Baker Senior Center Naples hosted the Collier County Dementia Care & Cure Initiative’s Dementia Resource Fair! 💜

This event brought together 11 local agencies offering valuable information on programs and services for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. With over 80 attendees, including community members, senior service professionals, and BSCN members, it was a day of connection, education, and support. Thank you to everyone who participated to help make this event a success!
