What is celestial navigation? 🌌

Celestial navigation is the practice of determining one’s geographic location on Earth by measuring the angles between celestial bodies like the stars, sun, or moon and the horizon. 🌞🌝✨

By combining these timed angle measurements with nautical almanacs, reduction tables, and some calculations, a sailor can accurately plot their position without the need for electronic instruments.

Plot twist: we lost our anchor after our 3 week passage from Aotearoa ⚓️

The crew was down below in the salon weathering the rain and wind in Tubuai (Austral Islands), when we realized we were a lot closer to a marker than we were before.

Our shackle broke, we started drifting towards shore. The crew immediately hops up to set our backup anchor and we drop a waypoint on the GPS.

A crew of 3 hoped in the dinghy to try to find the anchor with the waypoint, we flip in - the anchor is right under the dinghy 🙏

From anchor loss to rescue and reattachment - it was just over an hour. A competent, calm crew makes all the difference when things go astray at sea.

Along our passage from New Zealand to French Polynesia we were able to collect eDNA (environmental DNA) data in the high-seas. This was the first leg of our Avei Moana voyage in partnership with the . This data allows us to see what species have been in that specific part of the ocean, giving us an awesome base-line for species diversity. This eDNA collection equipment, designed and supplied by is just one of many tools used by our team to help learn about our oceans and work towards promoting a scalable and accessible pathway for collecting critical ocean data by communities throughout the world. The vast endless Ocean. From Aotearoa New Zealand to the Austral island archipelago in French Polynesia we sailed nearly 2500 nautical miles. In the middle of it all, the wind calmed for a moment and we could send the drone up to try and capture the feeling. Immense beauty leaves us continuously stunned, humbled and grateful for this beautiful planet we call home.

We’re stoked to finally release this episode from our last season in Polynesia. Join us as we visit an uninhabited atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

When we arrived, we discovered what it really meant to be in remote solitude. This part of the ocean was unlike anything we had ever experienced. Not to mention the stories from the island....cast away?! Treasure?!

The true treasure was the natural world we encountered, so vibrant and unspoiled!

Dozens of pilot whales!

It was spectacular to witness these incredible creatures between New Zealand and French Polynesia đź’™

Did you know the short-finned pilot whale is among the largest of the dolphin, or toothed whale, family?

🌊 They can reach sizes up to 25 feet! Highly social animals, they live their whole lives within their mother’s pod. Pods are typically 10-30 individuals but can be as large as 100 or more.

🦑 They hunt primarily at night diving to depths of up to 1,000 meters! Using echolocation to find prey in the dark, they target primarily large squid.

🤍 Another fun fact? Short-finned pilot whales are one of the very few animals known to experience menopause.
