In 2016, we approached Aldrich Presbyterian Church with a basic tenancy proposition, inquiring if we could rent some basement space for organizational purposes. At the time, the church had one tenant leasing 150 square feet (out of 22,000+ square feet!), with a few other groups utilizing shared spaces throughout the week.

Beginning with our basement renovation in 2020, and more recently following the acquisition of the entire church building in fall of 2024, it has been our vision to further activate the space for community flourishing. Recently, we reached a milestone worth celebrating: we rejoice in having fully activated all leasable spaces within the Center of Belonging, celebrating alongside the 10+ organizations who lease over 8,000 square feet of space and all the good work they do in our neighborhood!

But the work isn’t done quite yet! Now we turn our time and energy toward better activating our shared spaces for gatherings, events and one-time space uses. We dream of pickleball in the gym, concerts in the sanctuary, birthday parties and bridal showers in our lounges and common spaces!

Together, the Center of Belonging is coming alive. Thank you to all of you who’ve helped make it happen!

In partnership with Vandersall Collective, we’ve been working with The Presbytery of Southern New England and a few of their individual congregations for over a year. In the next phase our collaborative efforts, we’re zooming in our focus to support First Presbyterian Church of Hartford,(FPCH).

FPCH is one of the oldest churches around—a landmark site for the southern downtown area of Hartford,
nestled within a developing hub of creative expression and the arts. While its building is in need of some love and imagination and its financial runway diminishing, the leadership and people of FPCH are buzzing from a renewed sense of mission and vision, collaborative energy and firmer clarity of its place within community.

Dreaming and hoping for a bright future is, of course, good, beautiful and contagious. But it can also bring its own challenges, especially when it comes to sifting through all the options and opportunities. Which road should we go down? Who should we invite on it with us? And, with limited resources, how can we even go about it?

Over the next several months, these are some of the questions we will be unpacking with the people of FPCH and their neighbors, as they collectively seek to better steward the vision they have of being a great neighbor in downtown Hartford and beyond.

LIVING INTO NEW MANTRAS…

We are creatures of habit and, as such, if you’ve been out and about and around other people for any length of time, you’ve most likely heard someone say, “Well, that’s just always the way we’ve done it…”

Tradition is good. Rituals that have been practiced by thousands of people for hundreds of years can be grounding. Repeating the ways previous generations have observed and celebrated holidays or family gatherings can be honoring, familiar and comfortable. And yet, gone too far, sometimes the way we’ve always done it can become uninspiring and lethargic, at best; divisive and disruptive, at worst.

Part of our work in communities and alongside partners who own community spaces is to examine that statement—wondering if, perhaps, a new way of doing things is what’s needed next. It is true: where we are going will require of us to be mindful of where we are and where we have been (and the ways we’ve always done things), but it will also require of us to ask new questions, create new imaginations, develop new rhythms and live into new mantras.

Today's partner highlight is Ready Set Smile!

The value of an early positive association with the dentist is truly priceless and should be easily accessible for any child. Ready, Set, Smile is on an impassioned journey to deliver these services.

If you, or your child need dental care, please visit their website at https://www.readysetsmile.org/

(story continued): "By the time the provider was ready to start the visit, he was engaged and interested in learning about his teeth. As he left our chair, he expressed his excitement to share all that he had learned with his family and friends.

The following day, we returned to that same school. We were set up in the stage located in the cafeteria. After lunch, I heard a student asking for me. To my surprise, it was the same student I had seen the day before. He excitedly made his way over to thank me and tell me all about his commitment to caring for his teeth. He proudly shared how he had gone home and brushed his teeth five times and flossed! He also mentioned that he had stopped drinking soda and started drinking more water. I could not help but smile throughout the entire interaction. His excitement was contagious, and all of his friends stood behind him, listening carefully. Before he left, he said he could not wait to see us again so we could see how well he was taking care of his teeth.

This moment has stuck with me ever since. His visit did not last more than 20 minutes but that is all it took to empower him to care for his oral health. I left that day feeling extremely proud of the work we do at Ready, Set, Smile."
