Mission: Soo Visual Arts Center is a nonprofit art space that connects our community with fresh, under-represented and provocative art. Vision: Soo Visual Arts Center envisions a dynamic community in which artists and audiences challenge each other in an environment where art is integral to everyday life. Founded by visual artist Suzy Greenberg in 2001, our non-profit 501 (c)3 art space is based on the founder's relationship with art—one that views the artistic as vital to personal and community health and vision. We have exhibited over 2000 under-represented artists since opening our doors in 2001. As a leader in discovering new talent and with a strong focus on emerging artists from the state of Minnesota, SooVAC offers year-round exhibition, community and performance programming. “Studio Visit” by Sarah Abdel-Jelil is just getting started but you can contribute to the experiments at the opening this Saturday from 6-9pm. The Closing Reception for Sarah Abdel-Jelil’s experiments is Saturday, November 7, 2026, 6- 8 PM. In the meantime she set up a station for you to write love letters to the earth🥰 Sarah Abdel-Jelil

Sarah Abdel-Jelil is the third artist to participate in SooVAC’s pilot Front Space Residency. Throughout 2026, the program invites artists to create work both on-site and off-site, allowing their projects to evolve and adapt over the course of the exhibition. In Abdel-Jelil’s kaleidoscopic film work, she moves beyond a singular focus on the body to explore how a collective, fractal presence emerges through repetition and mirroring. During her residency, she will deepen this research by integrating film, soundscapes, textiles, and interactive sculpture.

Sarah Abdel-Jelil is a Mauritanian-American filmmaker, dancer, musician, and multimedia artist based in Minneapolis, Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota), USA. Inspired by her nomadic upbringing in a multicultural, interfaith household across eight different countries, her work explores the relational nature of home, movement, and liminal spaces as well as the tether between human and the more-than-human environment. She holds an MFA from the University of Minnesota and a BA in cinema and media studies from Carleton College and is a recipient of the 2026 Spillway Fellowship, 2019/20 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Early Career Artists and the 2017 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. Her work has been screened at numerous venues and festivals including The Performance Arcade (Wellington, Aotearoa/New Zealand) the Twin Cities Arab Film Festival, St. Cloud Film Fest, and Altered Aesthetics Film Festival. She has completed residencies at Rosy Simas Danse three thirty one space (Minneapolis, MN), Caldera Arts Center (Sisters, OR), Château de La Napoule (Mandelieu-La Napoule, France), and The Arts Centre (Ōtautahi, New Zealand). She is part of the CHANT (Culture Healing Nature Technology) collective and the Yalla Drum Ensemble with New Arab American Theater Works.

Catch-All by Erika Terwilliger Erika Terwilliger
Opening: Saturday, September 19, 2026, 6 - 9 PM
Exhibitions run September 24 - November 8, 2026

Catch-All by Erika Terwilliger excavates pockets of material accumulation found within Terwilliger’s home. Drawn from gutters clogged with silver maple leaves, corroding ventilation ductwork, and blue plastic tarp fragments, the exhibition offers handworked transformations of these familiar but overlooked things from everyday life. Terwilliger’s process mirrors repetitive actions of daily living, folding, wrapping, dipping, and stacking. The work finds its form through the small acts of transformation that occur within a deeply embodied way of making. Catch-All holds a material conversation between what we keep and what we toss, with a bit of breathing room in between.

Opening: Saturday, September 19, 2026, 6 - 9 PM
Exhibitions run September 24 - November 8, 2026

Trading Post: 41.77260° N, 72.66754° W, when a garden doesn’t return or can’t be found by Chotsani Elaine Dean offers a profound exploration of complex, layered realities. Dean’s practice is deeply informed by the visual archives and communal history of her ancestry. Her research finds its foundation in quilts created from the early European colonization of North America through the post-antebellum era—works stitched by enslaved and free African Americans on and off cotton plantations. These quilts, and the cotton that gives them life, serve as historical departure points to examine a painful era in American history. Through her work, Dean locates connected global economics and cultural commodities, unearthing the entanglements of people and place that continue to ripple into the present. Chotsani Elaine Dean
