Minnesota Music Archive

Minnesota Music Archive Building an archive of Minnesota-made music to preserve and amplify Minnesota’s music legacy. Powered by DEMO (Diverse Emerging Music Organization).

The roots of the Diverse Emerging Music Organization (DEMO) can be traced back to a former non-profit arm of First Avenue & 7th St Entry that was known as the Diverse Arts and Music Foundation (DAMF). Our mission today is very similar to what it was then: to promote, support, and educate emerging independent musicians, as well as communities eager for rich, multi-cultural experiences. DAMF was re-

organized outside of First Ave as DEMO by Steve McClellan in 2005 when he parted ways with club after serving 32 years as General Manager. We believe that music has the power to bridge barriers and that musical diversity is critical to maintaining a vibrant culture and community. We also believe that the most inspired music today comes from the multitude of passionate, innovative, and hard-working independent musicians who are cultivating their own paths. Since our inception, DEMO has showcased hundreds of emerging artists at dozens of venues throughout the Twin Cities. DEMO has promoted shows by Patti Smith, K’naan, Lucky Dube, The Hold Steady, and the Twilight Hours. We’ve benefited from (and helped share) First Avenue’s rich history through the 35th Anniversary Bootlegs CD, the screening of Rich Fuller’s film “Hay Day”, and a month long series featuring the landmark venue’s recently discovered “Basement Tapes”. DEMO has held educational music industry panels and discussions with MNartists.org and Springboard for the Arts at both McNally Smith College of Music and Summit Brewery on topics such as “Breaking into TV and Movie Music Licensing, "How I Learned To Survive In The Indie Music World", "The Ins And Outs Of Indie Music", viral marketing, and the future of music. We offer volunteer and internship opportunities, where students can learn first-hand about the music business and work with both musicians & the professionals who work with them. DEMO showcases give musicians the opportunity to connect with their peers and develop their artistic vision. This process also allows DEMO to provide audiences with access to a community rich in authentic artistic and cultural experiences. In turn, musicians are given access to attendees eager for diverse, multi-cultural experiences. The reputation, environment, and community aspect of our events, draws music fans that may have no idea who is performing before they arrive. DEMO fills a void by providing “unheard and unseen” musicians with a stage to develop and grow while creating a larger and more connected pool of local musicians with experience, name recognition, and audiences.

Having a good morning, Calendar Saturday friends? Not yet? Well then, let's go. May 1986⬇️

I’m just gonna say it.

Every generation thinks they had the best music…but honestly? The 1980s in Minneapolis make a pretty strong case.

The local music scene was innovative, unpredictable, and its own kind of weird — and that’s exactly what made it so special.

Presenting Minnesota artists including:
🎸 Limited Warranty — new wave
🎸 Man Sized Action — indie rock
🎸 Trip Shakespeare — soaring harmonies
🎸 Run Westy Run — alternative rock
🎸 TVBC — mainly instrumental experimentation
🎸 The Funseekers — surf pop

What do you think made it so special?

A week has passed since our awesome Art-a-Whirl weekend at Twin Ignition. Thanks to all who came by to drop off music for the archive, buy a book, catch up with DEMO/MMA, meet our partners and enjoy cool local music. What's cool now was also cool then. Cite this week's calendar from May 1983 as proof: (penciled-in) The Replacements, post-Commandos L7-3, the eventual Soul Asylum of Loud Fast Rules, future Trip Shakespeare E. Brown, Steve Kramer's Wallets, Batson Bros' Hypstrz, 2i, Loyal Subjects, Digital Rays, Ground Zero.…We listened then and we listen now and know the music in Minnesota is always something to celebrate. Your buds at DEMO/MMA wish you a great Memorial Day!

Good morning from Calendar Saturday Central, where we’re ramping things up for Art-A-Whirl 2026.

As you head out to see us this weekend, know that the story we’re telling through the Minnesota Music Archive is still being written. That’s why each week we share old club calendars and snapshots of Minnesota music history. It’s also why we embrace the evolving music scene and the artists and genres you’ll experience throughout Art-A-Whirl this weekend.

We’re also celebrating the people helping preserve these stories. ⬇ Details below. ⬇

⭐ 1PM — Author Cyn Collins will sign copies of Complicated Fun, her book exploring the artists, venues, and creative spirit that shaped the Twin Cities music scene.

⭐ 2PM — Michelle Leon, bassist for Babes in Toyland, will sign copies of her memoir I Live Inside.

Now back to our “regularly scheduled” programming with a look at May 1996 — the very same year Art-A-Whirl began.

The musicians featured on this calendar didn’t disappear when the posters came down or the month rolled over. The music, energy, and creative spirit behind these artists still ripple through Minnesota’s music scene today. Their stories continue through the relationship between artists, audiences, venues, writers, archivists, and the creative community that keeps showing up.

If you’ve ever enjoyed one of our archive posts, come connect with the people behind the music this weekend at Art-A-Whirl.
