On April 20, AFLC pastor and FLBC alumnus, Sam Wellumson, gave the opening prayer for the Minnesota House of Representatives.
Here are his thoughts on the experience:
"Serving as the 'Guest Chaplain of the Day' for the Minnesota House of Representatives was a great honor and privilege. One of my members (Dr. Rep. Gander) is in his first term in the House and arranged the opportunity.
The doors that God opened through that simple prayer were amazing. Several members of the House, as well as other individuals who work in the Capitol, told me how grateful they were to hear Jesus’ name on the floor.
As I reflect on the whole experience, I can’t help but think of how lonely it must be to serve in politics. The conversations I had made me realize that government officials are often treated as ‘tools’ to be used by all sorts of individuals and organizations.
If and when God gives you a chance to interact with someone who is placed in political authority by God (Ro. 13:1-2), remember their humanity. They are humans with the same insecurities as you and I have. Ask how you can pray for them in their role. By blessing them in that way, God will also use them as a blessing to you (Ro. 13:3-4 & 1 Tim. 2:1-4)."
