Education assistants are key parts of special education and are critical to Robbinsdale Area Schools meeting their legal obligations when it comes to special education supports. How many losses of staff can our district afford before we are no longer able to meet the statutory obligation we have?

Hey Robbinsdale community 💙

This is Beth and Sari, and we have a little update to share with you.

In a short amount of time, we jumped in headfirst - organizing rallies, creating email campaigns, speaking at school board meetings, and hosting listening sessions to support our teachers contract negotiations. Watching that contract get ratified and a strike get avoided meant everything to us. And we're not done cheering - we're still standing with our EAs as they fight for what they deserve.

But we'd be lying if we said we weren't running on empty.

We're working parents with multiple kids in this district, facing our own family transitions alongside many of you. Beyond this work, we both continue to volunteer in other capacities within the district, and the combination of it all has been a lot. The work has been incredibly meaningful - and right now, we need to take care of ourselves and our families first.

There are difficult decisions and conversations ahead for our community. We want to be a source of good information and real action - not noise. And that means showing up rested and ready.

The Parents For Good Robbinsdale page isn't going dark. You'll still see content here about public school advocacy, legislative updates, and everything the broader Parents For Good network is working on.

Get ready to once again show district leaders how powerful our community is.

By walking away from the negotiation table and calling for mediation, district leaders are sending a clear message that education assistants in Robbinsdale Area Schools are expected to wait even longer without a contract.

EAs are crucial to the safety, security, and success of our students, and without a fair wage, we risk losing even more EAs, losses we cannot afford.

Education Assistants are just as important to our schools as teachers are.

Research shows that EAs have a positive impact on students' reading and math scores, especially in racially isolated districts such as Robbinsdale Area Schools. When there is a higher ratio of adults to students, our kids are safer, better supported, and have access to what they uniquely need to not only succeed but also thrive.

If we want to close the equity gap is RAS District 281, we need to prioritize not only retaining the EAs we do have but making our district a desirable place to work for future EAs.

We’ve heard a lot about equity in the future planning of Robbinsdale Area Schools, but what does that mean?

The District is telling us that equity means each building has same classrooms, same class sizes, same amenities.

That’s equality-not equity.

Equity means that every student has the same level of access to the resources that they uniquely need in order to thrive and succeed; it does not mean everyone has the same thing.

If the District truly desires to improve equity, they need to start with the people. Education Assistants are a key part of equity, and they are now being expected to wait even longer for a fair contract.

Email the school board today and urge them to truly invest in equity by prioritizing EA pay.
