Banyan is rooted in the Phillips Neighborhood to transform lives by developing youth, strengthening families, and creating community.

A mid-sized non profit that was founded in 1998 as the Banyan Foundation. Later changed the name to the Banyan Community. Currently serves 120 youth and 75 families and has a reach to over 500 commmunity members through the LightHouse Network. Funding comes from Foundations and Corporations, Individuals and Churches.

Meet Nate Dixon! 👋

Nate is Banyan’s Secondary Program & College Access Educator, helping our young people navigate high school, college, and whatever path comes after graduation.

His personal experiences growing up and becoming the first in his family to attend college shaped his passion for his role at Banyan. Nate knows firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate the college and career process alone. Today, he gets to be the adult helping Banyan’s juniors and seniors build confidence, explore their options, and set goals for the future.

"No matter what pathway you choose in life, you should always have a plan." Well said, Nate. We're lucky to have your generous, positive, and thoughtful spirit on our team!

The new school year has officially arrived! 🎒 We’re happy to see students coming back through our doors, another year older (and maybe a little wiser, too). THRIVE and SOAR are back in action for our K–8 crew, ELEVATE’s study space is open five afternoons a week for high schoolers, and ASPIRE is here for one-on-one tutoring for our Higher Ground scholars.

From kindergarten through senior year, our students and families can always count on Banyan for whatever they need.

One of our favorite things about Banyan is that it’s multi-generational. Kindergarteners pass their grandparents on the way to the gym. Mom and dad might be in a meeting while their senior applies to colleges. It’s one of the things that makes Banyan such a close-knit, well-rounded community.

Mosquito bites, lake time, starry nights, s'mores...and laughing with your friends til' you cry. Banyan went to summer camp! It was a memorable way to finish out the summer and get us into the school year.

Our community garden has come a long way since we first started it in 2023. 🌱

This year, we’re also excited to share the garden’s harvest through a new food shelf supporting families impacted by the federal immigration crackdown.

We’re grateful to everyone who has helped this garden grow. And a big thank you to Hennepin County Government for highlighting our garden and other community gardens across the county!

Between summer programs and the start of the school year, things at Banyan can get a little quiet. But soon, these quiet hallways will be filled with students doing homework, making after-school snacks, shooting hoops, and finding their way through another school year, just one grade older. 💚

Banyan serves students in grades K–12 through programs like THRIVE and SOAR, our after-school programs for K–8 students; Elevate, which provides tutoring support for high school students; and Aspire, which provides academic support for high school students who receive Higher Ground Scholarship.

From kindergarten through high school, Banyan is a place where students can learn, play, grow, and feel safe.

🎒💙 Over 100 backpacks packed and ready to go!

A HUGE thank you to the amazing volunteers from St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and School who helped us pack more than 100 backpacks for Banyan youth!
