Reading Corps

Reading Corps is a high-impact tutoring program that empowers K-3 students to build their reading skills.

Reading Corps is an Ampact educational program that is fueled by research from the National Science + Service Collaborative. As a national organization, Ampact demonstrates the power of national service to solve complex social problems by creating innovative programs that focus on the key areas of education, environmental stewardship and healthy futures for communities.

In May, eight Reading Tutors graduated from the University of Minnesota with their Master of Education! These future educators participated in our two-year teacher pathway — serving as Reading Tutors and helping students build strong skills while completing University of Minnesota coursework. It's an incredible achievement, and we are proud to have played a small part in their journey to teaching!

For this week's , we're shining the spotlight on Jim! After 30+ years working in public service roles, including as a Guardian ad Litem in Nicollet County and a Respect Facilitator for the Greater Mankato Diversity Council, he wanted to keep busy in retirement.

Jim chose Reading Corps for the opportunity to work with students and make a difference. He realized he was doing so when he saw his students improve in just a few months! His favorite part of serving students is seeing their excitement when they realize they've grown in reading.

Meet our partners at OH Schultz Elementary in Mishicot, Wisconsin! Since 2022, the school has partnered with Reading Corps to help students build essential literacy skills through high-impact tutoring. Committed tutors have already helped 94 students become stronger, more confident readers — with more growth on the horizon!

We want to thank the dedicated locals behind this impact, including former tutors Connie and Dawn! This year, we're excited to welcome first-year tutor Mackenzie to the community. It's through this support, as well as the leadership of Principal Eric Nelson, that students have the tools they need to achieve lasting success.

Reading Tutors are trained in proven strategies to help students make progress in reading. Not only is this reflected in students' academic growth — their increased confidence becomes evident to parents, teachers, and other adults in their lives.

"There was one student who had trouble reading at the beginning of the school year," shares Reading Tutor Carly. "He just needed some one-on-one time to build his confidence and understand the basics. It was around winter break when I saw a huge difference. He was reading an entire page with very few mistakes and graduated from the program not long after. I got a letter from his mom thanking me for helping him gain more confidence and grow his reading skills."

We are so proud of this student and every kid in Reading Corps working hard to become a stronger reader!

We're excited to have Isabella back for a fourth term of service in Rochester, Minnesota, this year! She loves interacting with former students and getting to know new ones as they work together to improve their reading skills. It's those relationships that keep Isabella coming back -- she takes pride in getting to know the students and figuring out how they learn and are motivated.

But what's even better is hearing that what she is doing is making a real difference for kids. "I ran into a student's parent at the grocery store, and they thanked me for my time and efforts," Isabella shares. "This helped me to see that progress was being noticed at home as well as in school."

Join us in celebrating Lindsay Unified School District — a Reading Corps and Math Corps partner since 2025! With our programs in six elementary schools across the district, tutors have already supported students through more than 9,800 sessions.
