🤩 Indigenous Artist Highlight🤩
Here at NACDI and Make Voting a Tradition, we’ve had the honor of working with some incredibly talented Indigenous artists. Their artwork has been transformed into stickers that we proudly share at community events that we attend. These stickers are more than just swag—they’re a way to celebrate Indigenous creativity, spark conversations, and support Native artists while sharing the importance of indigenous activism and community engagement.

✨ This week, we’re excited to highlight the work of Indigenous artist Jayce Two Stars✨

Jayce Two Stars is a visual artist and is inspired by cinematography. He is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate (Dakota) and descendant of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians (Anishinaabe). His artwork is inspired by animation and the fluidity of Eastern anime. Finding his own style, pushing the boundaries of perspective, and making uncomfortable decisions comfortable are driving factors is Jayce’s art process. He blends multiple cultures, religions, and ethnic styles, blurring the lines of identity, to tell stories that have broad connections. Jayce is a self taugJht artist and his passion comes from wanting to leave a mark on history. Jayce is currently working on writing and animating a TV series.

🗳️ TODAY IS PRIMARY ELECTION DAY, MINNESOTA! 🗳️

If you haven’t voted yet, today is the day to make your voice heard. 📢

Your vote matters. Your voice matters. And the decisions made by the people we elect into office affect our families, our communities, our schools, our healthcare, our housing, our water, our infrastructure, our finances and most importantly our future.

Don’t think your one vote matters? It absolutely does. Elections are made up of individual people taking the time to show up and participate. Just one vote could change the outcome, your vote could be that deciding factor!!!

And if you’re working today, remember that Minnesota law gives you the right to take the time you need to vote without losing your pay, personal leave, or vacation time. Your employer cannot refuse, limit, or interfere with that right.

If you’re already at work, you have the right to take the time needed to vote and return to work. Polls are open until 8pm and as long as you're in the line you will be allowed to vote.

Our voices matter in every election, but the primary election is where many of the most important decisions start.

The leaders we choose in the primary often go on to make decisions that affect our schools, healthcare, housing, public safety, environmental protections, Tribal partnerships, and the future of our communities. In many races, the primary often decides who will appear on the general election ballot, making it one of the most important opportunities to have our voices heard.

In recent elections, we’ve seen something powerful: when Native communities vote, our voices are heard. Many elections are decided by just a small number of votes, and Indigenous voters have shown that our participation truly matters.

For Indigenous communities, these decisions are personal. They affect Tribal sovereignty, funding for Native programs, education, healthcare, clean water, natural resources, infrastructure, and whether elected leaders will listen to and work alongside Tribal Nations.

This isn’t about voting for any one party or candidate. It’s about making sure Indigenous voices are represented wherever decisions are being made. Our ancestors fought to protect our people, our cultures, and our future. Today, one way we honor that responsibility is by participating in the democratic process and helping shape the future for the next seven generations.

If water is important to us, if our children are important to us, if protecting our treaty rights and Tribal sovereignty is important to us, then the primary election should be important to us too.

Don’t let others decide who represents your community. Vote in the primary. Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to vote. Every voice strengthens our communities, every vote helps shape our future, and every generation depends on the choices we make today.

Our voices matter. Our votes matter. When we show up, we help shape the future—not just for ourselves, but for the next seven generations.

With the primary elections coming up soon, we want to take some time to help everyone better understand what the primary election is all about.

A primary election is when voters choose who they want to represent them in the general election. Think of it as narrowing the field—it’s your chance to help decide which candidates move forward.

Many people wait until the general election to vote, but in reality, the primary is where some of the biggest decisions are made. In many races, the outcome of the primary can have a major impact on who ultimately serves in office.

No matter who you support, take the time to learn about the candidates and make your voice count. Voting in the primary is one of the most important ways that we can help shape the future of our communities.

Our goal isn’t to tell you who to vote for—it’s to make sure everyone has the information they need to make an informed decision.

So please get to the polls August 11th. And vote in 2026 Primary Elections. And as always encourage your family and friends to MAKE VOTING A TRADITION. 🪶🗳️❤️🖤🤍💛

Here at NACDI and Make Voting a Tradition, we’ve had the honor of working with some incredibly talented Indigenous artists. Their artwork has been transformed into stickers that we proudly share at community events that we attend.

These stickers are more than just swag—they’re a way to celebrate Indigenous creativity, spark conversations, and support Native artists while sharing the importance of indigenous activism and community engagement.

✨ This week, we’re excited to highlight the work of Indigenous artist Josette Delgado ✨

Afton Josette Delgado is an enrolled member of the Oglala Tribe through her mother and a descendant of the Santee and Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate through her father. Together, she is Oceti Sakowin and resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Community and family taught, Afton also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and is pursuing a Master of Public Health.
As a multifaceted Dakota and Lakota artist, she creates across a variety of mediums, including beadwork, parfleche, dentalium, graphic design, painting, and ledger art. Her work reflects her identity, lived experiences, and the relationships she shares with her community, culture, and what it means to be home.
Inspired by the community that raised and encouraged her, Afton creates work that honors both the contemporary and traditional experiences of Native people. She collaborates with organizations, schools, community groups, exhibits, and public campaigns to create art that uplifts Indigenous voices in spaces where they have historically been underrepresented. For Afton, creating is more than a personal practice. It is community-led work that preserves culture, shares stories, and helps ensure the voices of our people continue to be seen, heard, and carried forward

Water IS life. Water connects us all.
No matter where we live, who we are, or how we vote, clean, safe water is something every family deserves. It sustains not only us but animals and plants as well.
For many Indigenous communities, water is more than a resource, it is a relative, a sacred gift, and a responsibility we carry and protect for the future generations.
Voting is one way we can help protect what sustains us. Whatever your political beliefs, please take time to learn where candidates stand on issues that matter to you, ask questions, and remember that the choices we make today help shape the future of our water tomorrow. Our voices matter, make your voice heard.

🤩 Indigenous Artist Highlight🤩
Here at NACDI and Make Voting a Tradition, we’ve had the honor of working with some incredibly talented Indigenous artists. Their artwork has been transformed into stickers that we proudly share at community events that we attend.

✨ This week, we’re excited to highlight the work of Indigenous artist Jonathan Thunder ✨
Jonathan Thunder attended the Institute of American Indian Arts - Studio Arts Program in Santa Fe (1999-2000) and received a B.A. in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics from the Art Institute International in Minneapolis (2005). His epic animated mural Manifest’o was installed in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 2021 - 2023. Thunder has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Jim Denomie Memorial Scholarship, the McKnight Foundation Fellowship, the Minnesota State Arts Board Grant, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and the Tiwahe Foundation Leadership Grant. His work has been included in numerous one-person, two-person, and group exhibitions at All My Relations Gallery, the Duluth Art Institute, the Highpoint Center for Printmaking, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Muskegon Museum of Art, Rochester Art Center, and the Tweed Museum of Art. Jonathan Thunder: Good Mythology premiered on PBS American Masters in 2023.
