ATTENTION, MINNESOTA VOTERS!

With Election Day coming up and early voting available NOW, we here at NACDI and Make Voting a Tradition want to make sure you are informed about as much of the voting process as possible.

From registering to vote, understanding what’s on your ballot, learning who the candidates are and what the positions they are running for actually do, knowing where to vote, understanding how to vote in person or by mail, and knowing what to expect when you cast your ballot—being informed matters.

With early voting in full swing, we want to make sure you know about a constitutional amendment on the 2026 Minnesota ballot.

WHAT IS THE AMENDMENT ABOUT?

This amendment concerns the Permanent School Fund and how funding from that fund is distributed to Minnesota school districts.

When you reach this question on your ballot, you will have two choices: YES or NO.

YES — votes in favor of the proposed amendment.

NO — votes against the proposed amendment.

IMPORTANT: DON’T SKIP THIS QUESTION!

Minnesota’s official ballot instructions state:
“Failure to vote on a constitutional amendment will have the same effect as voting no on the amendment.”

In other words, leaving the constitutional amendment question blank does not count as a Yes vote. It has the same effect as a No vote.

This is important because a constitutional amendment must receive a majority of all electors voting at the election in order to become part of the Minnesota Constitution.

So don’t accidentally leave this question unanswered simply because you didn’t understand how it works.

BEFORE YOU VOTE:
Read the question.
Learn what the amendment would change.
Ask questions.
Do your research.
Then make your own informed choice: YES or NO.

The official ballot says the proposed amendment would increase funding going to all school districts from the Permanent School Fund, with the change taking effect July 1, 2027, if approved. The ballot also describes the fund as supporting school districts without raising individual income or property taxes.

Being a leader is more than holding a title. Leadership comes with responsibility, accountability, and a duty to serve the people.

A strong political leader should be willing to:

Listen to the people — not just during election season, but throughout their term.

Represent the entire community — including people who may disagree with them.

Be informed — understand the issues, study the facts, and make decisions with the future in mind.

Be accountable — take responsibility for their decisions and be willing to answer to the people they serve.

Protect what matters — our communities, families, resources, rights, and infrastructure.

Work with others — leadership means finding ways to move forward, even when people have different opinions.

Think beyond today — good leadership considers how decisions will affect our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

With election time upon us, don’t choose based only on a name, political party, advertisement, or how someone tells you.

Ask questions. Do your research. Look at the candidates’ records, experience, positions, and priorities.

Ask yourself:

Who will listen?
Who will be accountable?
Who understands the responsibilities of the office?
Who will represent the whole community?
Who is prepared to serve—not just lead?

Every election gives us an opportunity to choose the people who will make decisions that affect our communities and our future.

Your vote is your voice, use it.
Every generation
Every election
Vote.

We are busy this week and weekend!

October 10th, find us at the Owamni Falling Water Festival.

Sunday, October 12th we'll be at the Indigenous People's Day Powwow at the Minneapolis American Indian Center AND the Indigenous People's Day Powwow at the American Indian Magnet School in St. Paul.

And all weekend, we will be at the Indigenous Peoples Weekend and Native American Food Truck Festival in St. Paul.

If you see us around the cities this weekend, stop by, say hi, and get some swag.

You know it’s true: If you got time to play bingo, you got time to vote.

Early voting is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your community this year.

Fight feeling helpless by being a helper! If you vote early, you can be available to take people to the polls, volunteer at a polling location, and make sure there isn't voter intimidation keeping people away from exercising their civic rights.

Voters with prior felony convictions, your voice matters too.
You can vote as long as you are not incarcerated or subject to a court order specifically revoking your right to vote.
Correctional facilities, probation/ supervised release officials MUST provide information about restoration of voting rights and voter registration.

Being on probation or parole DOES NOT prevent you from voting.

Share this information with someone you know who may need it.
