We are outraged that our friend and gifted artist Darrius Strong was subjected to a terrifying traffic stop by Edina, Richfield, and Bloomington police on Friday where officers drew their guns. We’re relieved Darrius is safe and that an apology was issued by the police departments. Police need to work on better training and processes so a simple act of verifying identity doesn’t become a life-threatening experience for a Black man.

Thanks to the dancers who came to our master class yesterday and to ARENA DANCES for inviting us to engage with Candy Box Dance Festival fans. Our artistic associate Laura had a grand time climbing the walls and rolling off the couch with you all. Here’s a short video of the hour-long class to give you a sense of how she manages to turn dancing alone in small space into dancing together across distances. https://youtu.be/i4JErCqLy6M Happy .

Hope everyone is safe and well. Just wanted to share this article about dance classes going online at UMD. S&S was supposed to take the stage, teach, and perform community activities in March, but the U shut down all its campuses. So, in five days, we pivoted to an online, comprehensive, college-level package of resources that includes dancer interviews, breakdowns of choreography to challenge the students, and material that inspired our dances. Then, we delivered realtime classes over the past two weeks. Rebecca Katz Harwood was ahead of the curve in supporting our shift to distance learning and it's nice to see the acknowledgement she received in the press for her program.

UMD dance and theater lose a personal touch, but the show must go on.

Here’s our twist on the 10 year challenge: looking back at 10 years of performance photos. New works, repertory ones, longtime dancers and new collaborators, it brought us to where we are now.
As we enter the next decade, we are grateful to our audiences, our supporters, our families, and most of all to our artists who have filled the last 10
years with wonderful experiences, collaborations, and laughter.
Thank you for all that you continue to do and here’s to shared prosperity and communal benefits in the 2020s.

Thanks to everyone who made it to our Halloween run of “Notes from a Séance” at the Barbara Barker Center for Dance. Literally, that was more than 200 of our dear audience members who followed us from the Cowles last spring to this more intimate space. And there were some new faces, which is always a treat.
Here are some pics from Saturday’s closing show. We hope to see you all at our The Southern Theater spring performance with Candy Box and Arena Dances.
