Ever wonder what an 🦪 does for fun? While they're not be picking up hobbies or binge-watching shows, these little guys have a pretty jam-packed daily routine! Their hobbies include:

🍽️ Fine Dining (24/7): An oyster's true passion is eating. They spend their time filtering excess algae, nitrogen, and other matter from the water. A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water /day!

🏗️ Interior Decorating & Community Building: Oysters love a group project. They cement themselves to one another to build oyster reefs, creating vital habitat and homes for crabs, fish, and other marine life.

🌊 Eco-Volunteering: They are nature's ultimate water purifiers! By filtering water to eat, they help keep Long Island Sound clean.

🏠 Hanging Out: Literally! Once a baby oyster finds the perfect spot (ideally, on oyster or clam shell) to latch onto, it settles down and never moves again.

Talk about a low-key lifestyle with a high-impact reward for Long Island Sound! 💙

We have MAJOR news! 🦪✨

In collaboration with the Connecticut Bureau of Aquaculture, Leetes Island Oysters, and Stony Creek Oysters, we recently conducted oyster recruitment surveys to monitor the restoration sites where we planted recycled shells back in June and July. The results? We found brand new oyster growth on the recycled shells!

This proves exactly why shell recycling matters. Baby oysters, aka spat, need hard surfaces to latch onto, and recycled shells provide the perfect habitat they need to survive, thrive, and grow.

Every shell saved from a landfill is actively helping us build a healthier, more resilient Long Island Sound 💙🦀

Thank you FOX61 for highlighting our work last month and why recycling oysters matter! Check out the full story and video here:

Over the course of three years, more than a million pounds of oyster shells from restaurants have made it back into the Long Island Sound.

🦪 Oyster lovers, rejoice: September is officially here!

The start of fall means cooler waters stop oysters from spawning. Instead of getting thin and watery, lower temps keep their meat plump, sweet, and firm—bringing peak flavor right to your plate! 🍁🌊
