This is Ronald…
An incredible guest of ours whose story is shared below through the words of his amazing Housing First Case Manager, Aleksander Papaluca.

“Over the past five years, Ronald has experienced a series of significant life changes and challenges that have profoundly impacted his life. Before experiencing homelessness, Ronald was a successful carpenter, a devoted husband, and a homeowner of a house he built with his own two hands in Woodbridge, Connecticut. He had built a life centered around his career, his home, and his family.
Approximately five years ago, Ronald experienced a serious medical emergency when he suffered a heart attack that resulted in his heart stopping for approximately 10 minutes. Although medical professionals were able to resuscitate him, the lack of oxygen he experienced resulted in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Following this event, Ronald experienced significant changes in his physical abilities, including losing much of the functional use of his hands and vocal skills. As a result, he was no longer able to continue working in the career he had dedicated much of his life to.
As Ronald continued adjusting to these changes, he experienced another devastating loss when his beloved wife passed away following her battle with cancer. With the loss of his wife and the changes resulting from his TBI, Ronald found himself without the support system he had previously relied upon. Financial responsibilities continued to accumulate, eventually resulting in the foreclosure of his home and Ronald experiencing homelessness for the first time in his life.
Hoping to create a new beginning for himself, Ronald attempted to relocate to Florida. However, the challenges associated with adjusting to life after his TBI made it difficult for him to establish the stability he needed. Ronald eventually returned to Connecticut, a place where he felt more familiar and connected to his surroundings.
Upon returning to Connecticut, Ronald found himself staying in the driveway of his former home. The new homeowner, Michelle, noticed a vehicle parked in the driveway and went outside to learn more about the situation. After Ronald shared his story with Michelle, she recognized that he was experiencing significant challenges and felt compelled to help in whatever way she could.
With Michelle's support, Ronald was eventually connected to the Beth-El Center Emergency Shelter Program. During his time at Beth-El, Ronald began working closely with Housing First Case Manager Aleksander Papaluca, who supported him in identifying opportunities to move toward stable housing and rebuild his independence.
Throughout Ronald's stay at Beth-El, Michelle continued to remain involved, checking in with him regularly and staying informed about his progress. With ongoing support and advocacy, Ronald was connected to a housing voucher that helped create a pathway toward his long-term housing goal.
Today, Beth-El Center is proud to celebrate an important milestone in Ronald's journey: Ronald has been connected with a one-bedroom apartment and is preparing to transition from the emergency shelter into his new home.
This moment represents more than simply obtaining an apartment. It represents an opportunity for Ronald to begin a new chapter, regain a sense of stability, and create a home where he can feel safe, comfortable, and supported. After everything he has experienced over the past several years, Ronald now has the opportunity to move forward and build upon the progress he has made.
While we will certainly miss Ronald's presence at Beth-El, we are incredibly proud of the progress he has made and excited to see what this next chapter brings. We hope his new home provides him with the safety, comfort, and sense of belonging he deserves.
We would also like to recognize and express our sincere appreciation to Rose Santiago, Ronald's voucher case manager from our community partners at Columbus House in New Haven. Rose played an important role in supporting Ronald throughout his housing process and helping him successfully connect with his new apartment.
Ronald's journey is a reminder that even after experiencing tremendous loss and unexpected life changes, new opportunities and new beginnings remain possible. We wish Ronald nothing but continued success, peace, and happiness as he begins this next chapter in his new home.”
