CASA of the Pines Court Appointed Special Advocates - A voice for abused and neglected children. What is CASA of the Pines? That’s where CASA of the Pines steps in.

Every year thousands of abused and neglected children in Texas are in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes. They are more likely than other children to face homelessness, unemployment, even prison as adults. When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge appoints a committed volunteer from CASA of the Pines to help them. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created in 1995 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children suffered at home did not continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. In 1999 CASA expanded to Houston County, and to Polk County in 2003. Since 1995 CASA of the Pines has served more than 1,500 abused and neglected children in Angelina, Houston, and Polk Counties.

Great tips! Keeping children safe should be all the time!

🎃 Halloween safety goes beyond checking the candy.

Between costumes, trick-or-treating, parties, and all the excitement, Halloween is also a good opportunity to remind kids about boundaries, trusted adults, and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right. A few simple conversations can help kids feel safe and supported on Halloween and throughout the year.

2-1-1 Texas is a free, anonymous service that helps people find assistance in our community. It is available 24 hours a day, every day, with information about food pantries, housing, utility assistance, child care, counseling, substance use treatment and other services. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission oversees the program through 25 regional Area Information Centers.

The Deep East Texas Council of Governments known as DETCOG—operates our region’s 2-1-1 Information and Referral Center in partnership with Texas HHS. Its role includes:
- Connecting residents with help: Identifying callers’ needs and referring them to appropriate local agencies and programs.
- Maintaining resource information: Collecting and updating information about community services in the statewide database.
- Supporting disaster response: Providing information about available assistance and recovery resources.
- Identifying service gaps: Using information about callers’ needs to help agencies understand where assistance is lacking.

To use it, dial 2-1-1 or 877-541-7905, or via the website at 211Texas.org. For an immediate emergency, call 9-1-1.
