The Christian Information & Service Center (CISC) in Lufkin, Texas, plays a vital role in fighting food insecurity in Angelina County. The center's ability to provide essential services to individuals and families facing hardship relies heavily on the dedication and generosity of volunteers. Their commitment enables CISC to effectively address the growing demands for assistance in the community. Without these invaluable volunteers, CISC would struggle to meet the needs of those it serves. Together, they work to create a stronger, more resilient community, showcasing the significant impact of collective efforts in combating food insecurity in Angelina County.
With that being said, enjoy this month's volunteer spotlight, featuring Mr. Gordon Blackman!
1. What made you begin volunteering at CISC?
Interesting, I bought a house from Kathy Yeager. When I bought the house, there was a sign posted out front that said, “I volunteer at CISC.” I didn’t know what that was, so I asked around, and I found that a lot of members of my church volunteered at CISC, so I wanted to check it out and that’s what I did. I volunteered when I was in Longview at the Longview Community Ministry’s Food Box, so I have experience working with food pantries.
2. What is your favorite part about volunteering at CISC?
The people, I enjoy the contact with the people, I enjoy pulling the items through. I like the volunteers, but I also like the clients too.
3. What would you recommend to someone who is looking to volunteer at CISC for the first time?
Just do it! 😊
4. How do you think that CISC is helping to combat food insecurity in Angelina County?
By taking donations and supplying them to those who are hungry.
Mr. Gordon, thank you for your incredible commitment to volunteering with us. Your dedication, assistance, and warm smile make a profound difference in our community!
