Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and mother figures today. Orangutan babies need their mothers for a very long time, relying on them for nutrition, comfort, and guidance, often until ages 8, 9, or 10. Even after that, young females will continue visiting their mothers frequently, choosing her as a social partner more often than others.

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Birutė Galdikas. Birutė was one of the pioneering figures in the study of orangutans. Her early research on these apes in Borneo laid the foundation for our understanding of orangutan behavior, ecology, and conservation. Her work helped bring global attention to the urgent need to protect these remarkable apes and their forest homes. For those of us who have followed in her footsteps, her legacy is deeply personal. Our thoughts are with her family, colleagues, and the many people whose lives she touched. Her impact will endure in the forests of Borneo and in the science and conservation efforts she helped build.

Pictured here is our Executive Director, Dr. Cheryl Knott (left), Dr. Galdikas (center) and Dr. Carel Van Schaik (right), another leader in orangutan research from the University of Zurich. They stand in front of the portrait of Dr. Louis Leakey at the Leakey Foundation headquarters. This was taken during the Orangutan Cultures workshop sponsored by the Leakey Foundation in April 2002.

Friends in the US, tune in at 8:00 PM Eastern tonight on PBS/Nature!

Parenthood is a five-part television series narrated by David Attenborough that shows how animals cope with the challenges of becoming parents and raising their young. The theme of Episode 5 is “Jungles”, and one of the species featured is the orangutan, filmed entirely in Gunung Palung National Park at the Cabang Panti Research Station by Tim and Russell Laman.

On Wed Feb 25, the Jungles episode featuring our GP Orangutans will air for the first time in the US, on PBS/Nature, at 8 PM Eastern. Don’t miss it!
