🏃🏽‍♀️Μαραθώνας🏃Good luck to all the runners competing in today’s 130th Boston Marathon!

Today, we remember Stylianos Kyriakides, winner of the 50th Boston Marathon!

Born on January 15, 1910, Kyriakides was a Greek Cypriot Marathon runner, Olympian, and hero. 💪🏽

Kyriakides, who narrowly escaped ex*****on during WWII during the N**i occupation of Greece, hadn’t run a marathon in six years before traveling to Boston to compete in the 50th Boston Marathon in 1946.

He was emaciated from lack of food during the war, to the point where doctors didn’t want him to run for fear he would die in the streets. Despite their worry, Kyriakides convinced them he was fit to compete — as his goal was to WIN THE MARATHON and bring aid home to Greece, who was in dire need of assistance following the war.

As a shell of the man he once was, Kyriakides defied odds and WON THE 50th BOSTON MARATHON, returning to Greece with 25,000 tons of supplies in American aid, including $250,000 in cash.

Welcomed with open arms by more than one million Greeks lining the streets of Athens, Kyriakides returned a Greek hero whose contribution to Greece we remember to this day. 🇬🇷

Μεγάλη Πέμπτη | Great and Holy Thursday ✝️

Μεγάλη Πέμπτη in the Greek Orthodox faith commemorates the Last Supper, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the washing of the disciples’ feet, and Christ’s betrayal.

Today, we dye eggs red to symbolize the blood shed by Christ at the crucifixion and the promise of eternal life. 🔴
