🌿 We Did It. Ard Na Gréine is Preserved. 🌿

After years of work, partnership, and perseverance, we’re proud to share that the Sussex County Land Trust has officially preserved Ard Na Gréine, an 88-acre generational farm in Lewes.

This project began in 2019 and came to life through an incredible collaboration between public partners, private donors, and a family deeply committed to conservation.

This isn’t just another project—
👉 It’s one of the last remaining large tracts of open space east of Route 1 in the Lewes area
👉 It’s a working farm that will remain protected for generations
👉 It’s a transformational investment in the future of eastern Sussex County

We are especially grateful to the Wells/Miller family for their vision and stewardship, and to our partners at USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Delaware DNREC, Sussex County, Del., government, The Longwood Foundation, and many private donors with the help of the Greater Lewes Foundation.

📍 Important Note:
The property is not yet open to the public, and the driveway off Donovan’s Road remains private access only as we begin a thoughtful master planning process.

This is a huge milestone for SCLT—especially as we celebrate our 25th anniversary—and a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together to protect what matters.

🌎 Happy Earth Day! 🌱

Last week, as part of their Annual Benevolence Day, our friends at Dogfish Head rolled up their sleeves at our Forest of the Broadkill Preserve to give back in a big way.

From building new trail sections to clearing and cleaning existing paths, their team—alongside some awesome OCS community members—made incredible progress in improving access to this beautiful natural space. Their energy, teamwork, and commitment to conservation truly made an impact.

We’re so grateful for partners like Dogfish Head who show up, give back, and help us care for the lands that make Sussex County special.

Here’s to continuing the work—today and every day. 🌿

🐰🥚 What a day at the Wolfe House!

Thank you to everyone who joined the Sussex County Land Trust for our inaugural Easter Egg Hunt!

We welcomed 100 attendees for a beautiful afternoon filled with egg hunting, exploring the grounds, touring the house, and enjoying story time. The Easter Bunny was a big hit, and it was great to see so many families staying after the hunt to learn more about the Land Trust.

A huge thank you to our board volunteers for day of and event prep help. Events like this truly take a team.

This was such a fun way to celebrate our 25th Anniversary and connect with the community—we’re already looking forward to the next one!

We’re proud to share that the Sussex County Land Trust has been named the 2026 Conservation Stewardship Award winner (Green Conservation Category) by the .

The award recognizes projects that go above and beyond Delaware’s sediment and stormwater regulations to protect natural resources.

Our application highlighted Stephen P. Hudson Park, a conservation-managed public park and trailhead along the Georgetown–Lewes Trail. Once an agricultural field, the site was intentionally designed with infiltration-based stormwater practices, phased construction, and limited land disturbance to reduce runoff, prevent erosion, and protect surrounding forested land.

This project would not have been possible without strong partners, including Scaled Engineering, Nally Ventures, Envirotech Environmental Consulting, and the Hollymount 4-H Club, whose members helped remove temporary erosion controls once the site was stabilized.

Hudson Park will also be the future home of the Can-Do Playground, a universally accessible playground being led by the Sussex County Rotary Clubs.

As Sussex County continues to grow, projects like Hudson Park demonstrate how public access, recreation, and environmental stewardship can coexist through thoughtful planning and collaboration.

We’re honored by this recognition and grateful to the partners and supporters who make this work possible.
