"Peace and good humor must be maintained around this fountain at all times.” This final note on installation instructions for the beloved “Showers” fountain here at the Rehoboth Art League campus encapsulates artist Gary Hughes’ whimsical approach to creativity. And with the help of a transformative gift from his wife, Ellen Roney Hughes, the Showers sculpture has emerged on campus this spring with a fresh setting and new plantings.

As part of the upgrades made to the fountain’s welcome area, greeting all who arrive at the art league, the bronze sculpture was transported to a foundry in Philadelphia for a complete cleaning and replumbing of its inner workings. Meanwhile, a design was mapped to keep the existing footprint of the fountain area and improve its longevity with brick and slate finishes, which compliment other campus materials. Native plantings, installed by our Delaware Master Naturalist volunteers, completed the look.

Plan your visit to the freshly renovated “Showers” fountain, and if you’re interested in learning more about what transformative gifts can do for the Rehoboth Art League, contact our development team at [email protected]

Learn to paint Liminal Spaces! Liminal Spaces are transition places, such as Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, showing both café and the street. They give the artist an opportunity to explore interiors, landscapes, still life or their imagination.

🏳️‍🌈🎨The Rehoboth Art League celebrates Pride Month by shining a light on LGBTQ artists in our Fine Art Collection and is pleased to recognize the exceptional talent of Tom Wilson.

Thomas R. Wilson (1946–1995) was born in Dover, Delaware, and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1969. He began his artistic career in New York City, exhibiting portrait paintings throughout Europe, including France, Germany, and Italy. Alongside his work as a painter, Wilson also modeled for prominent menswear designers.

After returning to Lewes in 1981, Wilson met his partner, Leo Medisch, with whom he shared the rest of his life. He studied with renowned Rehoboth Art League Howard Schroeder and became known for his vibrant landscapes and compelling portraits that captured the spirit of Delaware’s coastal communities. Through his work, Wilson celebrated the people and culture of Rehoboth Beach, portraying people of color, farm workers, and drag performers with warmth, dignity, and authenticity.

Today, the Rehoboth Art League continues to honor his legacy through the Tom Wilson Best in Show Award, presented annually at the Young at Art exhibition to a promising young artist.
