Forest Academy We are an outdoor education program that focuses on problem solving, self-control, and social skills.

The mission of Forest Academy is to return a sense of wonder and joy to the young child’s educational experience through immersion in a natural environment that provides opportunities for developmentally appropriate, child-led play. Our program focuses on helping children to develop essential life skills such as problem solving, self-control, perseverance, resilience, and social-emotional skills. There is a growing body of research that shows how important these skills are to help kids participate more effectively in their education and their lives, as well as how Forest Schools help to develop these skills.

We want to thank the community for all their support in donating gently used outdoor gear. Being out in public at the Farmer's Market brought such great energy in meeting people who may have never heard of the work we do here at Forest Academy.

If you missed the in-person sale, no worries. We've had volunteers use an online platform to post the things still available...with some other exciting things available to bid on!
Auction will be live at noon, Friday October 16th!

Forest Academy will be on Fall Break from October 19-23. We hope you have a wonderful restorative break with your families, and get some time out in nature!

While Forest Academy will be closed, we will be joining some community events this week:

We are happy to join Purdue Forestry and Natural Resources Department at the Fall into Nature event.
Come see some of our teachers at our educational booth Thursday, October 22, 4 - 7 pm at Horticulture Park/Stewart Woods.

On Saturday, October 24th from 1-4pm we'll be handing out treats in the community at the Cops & Goblins Trunk or Treat event hosted by the Lafayette Police Department! It's always a joy to see so many of the Lafayette community children and families enjoying a fun, safe, and festive evening.

At Forest Academy, the connection we have with the natural world is the solid foundation upon which we build our programs.
It's important to acknowledge the people who came before us; as well as helping our children develop an appreciation for the history, cultures, and traditions connected to the land we use today to play, learn, and explore.

One of our classes recently learned about the Indigenous law "A Dish with One Spoon"- a treaty that people will take only what they need.
This is an excellent example of stewardship and sustainability. These are the types of lessons that every child takes away from forest school.

On World Mental Health Day, we're proud to recognize an important step in strengthening support for the children and families we serve.

Recently, Forest Academy staff completed Wilderness Mental Health First Responder training through the Institute for Wild Med. This training taught our staff strategies for self-regulation during medical and mental health emergencies and how to intentionally use both ourselves and the natural environment as therapeutic tools while supporting individuals in crisis. It also reinforced ways to use nature-based experiences to foster resilience, strengthen emotional well-being, and promote positive mental health in our students' everyday lives.

This opportunity was funded by North Central Health Services through the Partners for Youth Su***de Prevention Initiative.

Forest Academy was created in response to the youth mental health state of emergency facing our nation. Through meaningful relationships, therapeutic support, and immersive nature-based learning, we strive to help children build the resilience, confidence, and connection they need to thrive.

Today and every day, we remain committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our students, families, and community.
