TMI Project Storytelling Is Social Justice

TMI Project is a nonprofit transmedia organization teaching true storytelling workshops and creating inspiring live performances and bold digital content that focus on the “too much information” parts of a story, the parts typically left out because of shame or stigma. We believe that sharing radically candid, true personal narratives ignites human connection, challenges the status quo, and inspir

es both storytellers and listeners to take action for positive social change. Since 2010, TMI Project has led approximately 90 true storytelling workshops and staged live storytelling performances by more than 1,750 storytellers, which have been presented to audiences of nearly 50,000 people in schools, colleges, prisons, mental health clinics, theaters, community centers, and the United Nations.

As a father of triplets, Tyler finds new motivation to face what he’s been through and begin shaping a different path for his three sons.

“Maybe my sons will see me shed a tear. Maybe I can soften. Maybe optimism lives here. Maybe I can ask for help. Maybe it’s not too late. Maybe today can be the day that I believe.”

This Mental Health Awareness Month, Tyler reminds us that it’s worth doing the work to break cycles of generational trauma. In fact, it might be the most important, impactful way to make change in this world.

These are the first words Cai says to his therapist. He knows he needs help, but he’s spent his life keeping his emotions protected, breaking the connection between his mind and his heart, training himself not to feel.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, Cai reminds us that if we run away from our experiences, they will always chase us. But if you pause, share your story, and face the truth, you can experience more freedom. It’s never too late to ask for help, do something differently—no matter how uncomfortable it is—and go down a new path.

We live in a wild world, and the big, bold spirit of our beloved late co-founder Julie Novak knew just what to do in times like these. That’s why we launched The Julie Novak Storytelling: it’s an alternate universe where magic exists, and we remember that being human is a shared, intergenerational experience– no matter if it’s telling a story onstage or coloring a picture on the page. Our club isn’t just a workshop or a performance; it’s a profound experience rooted in true storytelling.

What’s more, your club membership lasts a lifetime. (It says so on our membership card.)

In less than a month, we launched our BRAND NEW program The Julie Novak Storytelling Club, both in-person and online, with two club meetings in English and one in Spanish. We can’t thank the first club members enough for helping us test these waters. We’d love to keep hearing your feedback so that we can continue to shape the club to be exactly what our community of storytellers, audience members, and everyone else in between dreams of. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a new space to feel safe, seen, and enjoy some raucous storytelling, head over to tmiproject.org and register for next month’s meetings; our theme is MAGIC.

Because you are! ✨🪄🦄

Here, Morris shares a letter to his grandmother, saying all he wished he could have said:
“When you were alive, I had all sorts of books about schizophrenia. But you didn’t read them because you didn’t believe it. I wish you understood my illness better.”

Morris reminds us that being seen, heard, and understood are essential for feeling whole. We don’t always get a chance to say what we need to say, but storytelling allows us to go back in time.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we remember that healing isn’t always linear, but it is always possible.

You can hear Morris’ full story on our podcast, The TMI Project Story Hour. Link in bio.
