TMI Project Storytelling Is Social Justice

TMI Project is a nonprofit transmedia organization teaching true storytelling workshops and creating inspiring live performances and bold digital content that focus on the “too much information” parts of a story, the parts typically left out because of shame or stigma. We believe that sharing radically candid, true personal narratives ignites human connection, challenges the status quo, and inspires both storytellers and listeners to take action for positive social change. Since 2010, TMI Project has led approximately 90 true storytelling workshops and staged live storytelling performances by more than 1,750 storytellers, which have been presented to audiences of nearly 50,000 people in schools, colleges, prisons, mental health clinics, theaters, community centers, and the United Nations.

Does your ✨ SPIRIT ✨ feel down because you missed last night’s October edition of The Julie Novak Storytelling Club? We understand! We loved seeing all the SPIRITed faces in that room, all of whom are card-carrying members, including our Executive Director Eva Tenuto, who, for the first time in ten years, shared a personal story against the backdrop of her first solo exhibition of paintings, “Life After | After Life,” now on view at Good Work Institute. 👩‍🎨🎨🫟

We also celebrated TWO 🎉🥳🎈 birthdays: beloved TMI Project anchor and legend Sari Botton as well as Eva’s mom Alice, a fervent supporter of ours from the very beginning. (Which meant, of course, cake for all! 🎂)

We first met Shaundraneka Nakia Gills when she joined our true storytelling workshop with the Poughkeepsie Farm Project. Within a year, Shaun’s SPIRIT found itself as part of our brand new workshop leader cohort, and TOMORROW night, TUESDAY (not our usual Wednesday!) 10/6, you can bask in the glory of Shaun’s brilliant SPIRIT too, as she’ll be one of the club leaders for this month’s in-person session of The Julie Novak Storytelling Club.

Our theme? Why, SPIRIT of course! Bring yourself and nothing else, and come experience the SPIRIT that we always bring to the club. See you there.

You ready? This month, our new workshop leader Shaundraneka Nakia Gills will be leading the charge at the Storytelling Club. We’d love to introduce you two!

Shaundraneka Gills is a writer, poet, and community educator passionate about storytelling, healing, and youth development. A sociology graduate with experience in mentoring, tutoring, workshop facilitation, and community engagement, she uses writing as a tool for connection and personal transformation. Shaundraneka is the author of Rebirth of a Gemini, her debut poetry collection exploring identity, growth, vulnerability, and rebirth. Through her work, she creates spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered to tell their truths with honesty and courage.

Join Shaun and the rest of the club members TUESDAY, Oct. 6 (not our typical Wednesday!), from 7–9 PM EST at the Good Work Institute in Kingston, NY for an evening of true storytelling, writing, listening, and connection.

A quick heads-up: October’s in-person meeting of The Julie Novak Storytelling Club is special for a few reasons.

✨ It is one week from today, on Tuesday, October 6, from 7–9 PM. (Mark your calendars! It’s a Tuesday, not our usual Wednesday.)

✨ This month’s theme is SPIRIT. TMI Project co-founder and Executive Director Eva Tenuto will be sharing one of her own personal stories, marking the first time in nearly 10 years that she’s read her own TMI Project story! (Photo: first run thru today!)

✨ And, to make this month a little extra special, The Club will meet surrounded by Eva’s first solo exhibition, Life After | Afterlife, which brings together the entire body of paintings she created in the year after Julie passed away, more than 20 pieces in all. Thanks to Micah for hanging the show after hours last night.

We are thrilled to share the experience with the our TMI Project community.

We’ll be gathering at the Good Work Institute, 65 St. James Street, Kingston. As always, you can expect Spanish interpretation, food, drink, and an evening of laughter in community.

It promises to be a SPIRITED evening and we hope to see you there!
