What do math and music have in common?

More than counting! 🎶 Join mathematician and concert pianist Eugenia Cheng and mathematician and violinist Dave Kung for a lively talk-and-concert exploring the hidden mathematical structures in some of their favorite pieces of Western classical music.

Hear them bring the ideas to life at the piano and violin, with music by Bach, Debussy, Chopin, Elgar, Gounod, and Brahms, including a performance of Brahms’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in G major.

What makes Math Out Loud so special? It’s the people in the room. 💛

Last week, Vanessa Vakharia brought incredible energy and enthusiasm to her talk, and the audience matched it every step of the way. Together, we explored math anxiety, where it comes from, and how we can change the stories we tell ourselves about math. The curiosity, laughter, and openness made it such a memorable evening.

We’re excited to keep the conversation going with our next Math Out Loud: Math in Concert with

Eugenia Cheng and Dave Kung! 🎶 They’ll explore the hidden mathematical structures in some of their favorite pieces of classical music, with live performances throughout the evening.

So now you know about 3, 4, 5. But did you know that 10, 24, 26 is a Pythagorean triple too? 📐

In just a couple weeks it'll be 10/24/26, making it a Pythagorean triple date. And this one is worth celebrating. It’s the last one of the century!

We’re marking the occasion with Pythagorean Palooza at Seattle Universal Math Museum. Join us on October 24 for right-triangle-themed exhibits, puzzles, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Save the date and come celebrate with us! 🎉

Come join us at the Seattle Universal Math Museum and celebrate the magic of right triangles on the last Pythagorean triple date of the century!

A Pythagorean triple is a set of three integers that satisfies the Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c². On 10/24/26, the date itself forms a Pythagorean triple: 10² + 24² = 26².

Come celebrate this special mathematical event with right-triangle-themed exhibits and activities. Explore, experiment, solve puzzles, and discover the surprising ways right triangles show up in mathematics and the world around us.

Free to attend and fun for all ages!

What does it actually mean to be a “math person”?

Maybe it’s not about being fast, getting every answer right, or always feeling confident. Maybe it’s simply about being a person who is willing to engage with math.

How we feel about math influences how we solve problems, respond to challenges, and think about our own abilities—and those experiences can shape how we teach, mentor, parent, and lead.

Join us at The Museum of Flight for an interactive conversation about the psychology of math, confidence, and learning.
