Join us as Seattle’s blindness community takes to the streets to celebrate independence, mobility, and community.

White Cane Day recognizes the achievements of people who are blind or low vision and celebrates the white cane as an important tool for independent travel.

Tomorrow, people who are blind and low vision will walk alongside friends, families, community organizations, and allies—and you’re invited to walk with us!

In our latest video, Dr. Jennifer Crown, optometrist and low vision specialist at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc., explains how a functional vision assessment goes beyond the traditional eye chart to look at how someone uses their remaining vision in everyday life.

From reading and cooking to managing medications, navigating the home, using technology, and enjoying hobbies, the right tools and strategies can make a meaningful difference.

A job is about more than a paycheck.

Employment can provide independence, purpose, connection, opportunity, and the ability to build a future.

That's one reason National Disability Employment Awareness Month matters so much to us at The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

For people who are blind, DeafBlind, and blind with other disabilities, barriers to employment can prevent talented people from having the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do.

We're working to change that—through meaningful jobs, accessible workplaces, skills training, career development, and opportunities for advancement.

🍂 Fall Clean Up around the Lighthouse 🍂

Join us Wednesday, November 11, from 12:30–3:30 PM at 2501 S. Plum Street for a few hours of fresh air, teamwork, and do hands-on good in our community.

Clear sidewalks and wheelchair ramps are essential for safe navigation for people who are blind, DeafBlind, or blind with other disabilities. Together, we’ll trim, sweep, edge, and remove debris and overhanging foliage around the Lighthouse.

We’ll provide the tools, bags, and know-how. You bring energy, gloves, and a willingness to help!

Bring your work group, book club, service club—or come on your own. Let’s make our community safer and more accessible, one sidewalk at a time. 🍁

On October 17, Seattle’s blindness community will come together to celebrate independence, community, and the freedom to navigate the world on your own terms.

The annual White Cane Day Walk brings together people who are blind and low vision, families, friends, blindness organizations, community partners, and allies for a visible celebration of blind independence.

Whether you use a white cane yourself or simply want to support the blindness community, we’d love to have you join us.
