Excited to have a new player join for Thursday's practice!

PRACTICE FOCUS: 'Effective, Positive Communication'
At this week's session we rotated who took turns being captain, and therefore who we expected to lead team communication. The different captains took turns organizing the team during scrimmages, and making sure players were where they’re supposed to be.

TAKEAWAY:
What players emphasized during the end of practice reflection was the need for positive, SPECIFIC communication. Giving direction to other players became more effective based on them knowing exactly what you wanted from them (eg. make a run to the right, cover the player on the left).

LIFE PARALLEL: Specific communication can help during practice, in a game, in life, in relationships, and at work. It avoids confusion, and eases tension.

FOX Sports reached out to Street Soccer Seattle about shooting a spot to run before today's game about street soccer culture in City of Seattle.

We were flattered, AND we knew where to turn. Within a day Tyson (of Les Kick't), Coach G, and SSS program participants filled Judkins Park and played hours of pickup while the Fox Sports crew filmed. Usually these runs are on Friday, but the crew made Wednesday feel a lot like Friday!

Tune in today from 11:30-11:40am (PST) before the game today to see the TV spot!

And a special mention that the CEO of the reigning Egyptian Homeless World Cup champions, Ibrahim, showed up with SSS President Chris Burfeind and Volunteer Coordinator Yoel Ortiz to throw down on the concrete!

Can't wait for the FIFA World Cup to start next week, and looking for something to do this weekend to hold you over?

Check out Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI)'s amazing exhibit THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: How Soccer Connects Us All.

And while you're there, look for Street Soccer Seattle's historic futsal on the 'ball wall' showcasing the diversity of the Seattle's soccer community. Post pics and tag us!

USL legend, Craig Tomlinson–who played with the team from 2000-2008–showed up for the youth in a big way last Sunday at RAVE Foundation's Free Day of Soccer Play. For four hours he brought infectious enthusiasm for the game, and he had this to say about our Street Soccer Seattle volunteers, Adam (also a Grassroot Soccer point person) and Nigel:

“They had an amazing attitude. They were so connected with the kids and the game, and made the kids feel like they have a safe space. How they engaged with the kids I think was remarkable.”

At 's Free Day of Soccer Play on Sunday, we caught up with Ezrah & Francie for some feedback.

Here' s what they had to say (click photos):

What a day it was Sunday at the 1st of 's 52 free play fields: the heavily-used Yesler Terrace Park turf mini-pitch. Over a hundred youth and their parents participated throughout the course of this event--with Seattle Parks and Recreation & Seattle Office of Housing reps in the house.

Street Soccer Seattle volunteers Nigel and Adam (also a point person for Grassroot Soccer) held it down ALL afternoon with the help of USL Sounders legend Craig Tomlinson.

It's been a good week if you've played soccer twice.

GAME REFLECTION: sustainable play/stamina

Although SSS played well for much of the game, the organization and the communication broke down somewhat towards the end of the game, and we passed less as a result. Plenty to work on in practice together this Thursday!
