In September, we also said goodbye to our phenomenal IT Specialist and Web Developer, Tariku Allen. Tariku’s wisdom and skill have saved the day on more than one occasion! Tariku was instrumental in making our website more accessible; creating a beautiful webpage and inventory for our first annual plant sale; wrangling summer camp registration software— NO small feat; creating a recipe bank on our website of all the recipes we cooked during camp; and ensuring we stayed online, logged in, and up-to-date, to name just a few. We are grateful for your wisdom; your skill; your wit; your integrity; your heart; your smile; and your love of the community. We wish you the best in your next adventure, friend. Our gratitude💛💚

It’s been quiet over here; however, we do have some updates to share: In September, we bid farewell to our beloved Garden and Volunteer Manager and dearest friend, . Annie came on as an Educator in 2018, then as Garden Manager and Educator in 2019, and stepped in as Camp Manager in 2021. Annie is dedicated to creating community around the garden, and that is what she has worked to do, even in the midst of the pandemic: In June of 2020, Annie began opening the garden gate, daily, to invite community in to chat, to harvest, to share knowledge, recipes, and stories, and thus, GPS enjoyed strong friendships with folks from all over the neighborhood. Around the same time, she began the Thursday Free Harvest program and Tuesday Night Volunteer program, the latter which turned into a robust community that helped us put on our first plant sale and who served as our backbone of support during summer camp. Additionally, Annie partnered with many different farmers and educators to expand our methodologies and to help us consider what it means to steward this land. As an educator, Annie’s approach is to come alongside folks to encourage and support their curiosity and use that as the spring board into their learning. She believes in people’s capacity to grow in our knowledge and experience by digging in and by teaching others, thus empowering ourselves to make informed decisions around food and food sovereignty, all while fostering a community of respect and of joy. And that’s really the GPS mission right there. Annie once told us that the garden is her love letter to the world, and that struck us deeply. What better way to show the world love and hope than by planting and encouraging things to grow? When not running programming, one would find Annie in the garden with community, planting and harvesting lesser known plants, snacking on heirloom tomatoes, sharing the wonder of companion planting, cradling chickens and gourds, and laughing. Annie, we are deeply grateful for your vision; your integrity; your dedication; your gentle spirit; and your sweet heart. We wish you all the best, and we also, keenly, feel the loss. Our deepest gratitude, friend.

We bid adieu to our dynamite and beloved Marketing and Communications manager, Kiran revitalized the voice through monthly newsletters, our website, and social media. She gave a voice to our volunteers with guest blog posts and IG take-overs, and to our garden through weekly garden videos with and vibrant photos. Kiran was instrumental in sharing the summer camp experience with our community, photographing the discovery and joy, creating a recipe bank of every dish we made —check out our website—, and leading us through two Indian food cooking sessions, resulting in some of the best food any of us have ever tasted. She’s also the biggest champion of a Green Plate Special “Ice Cream Emergency,” and has one of most radiant smiles there ever was! As we shared our experiences of Kiran on her last day, a theme emerged: Joy. Kiran has brought so much joy to the garden, our community, and our hearts.
We are excited for your new adventure, friend, and we will miss you dearly. We couldn’t be more grateful. ❤️🌻

We did it!! (Drumroll please)

A big round of applause for the entire education staff and volunteers who finally pulled it off. You are the best. 💛

We successfully completed 5 weeks of camp. Months of tending the garden, caring for chickens, inventory, training, sweat and tears (yee, tears) have gone into planning and executing the camp this year.

We are grateful to all educators, staff, volunteers, youth, and families who made it happen. Cheers to you.

Stay tuned for our upcoming programs.

Another successful art activity completed by youth this week.

On Thursday, we each took a bandana, painted with a solution of soy milk and water (1:1), and let it dry for a day. The next day, we dipped our bandanas into a boiling pot of black tea for 10-20 minutes.
..And here are the results!

You must be wondering why we used soy milk. Well, the proteins present in the soy milk bind closely with tea and give out a beautiful shade of brown.

The longer you let your bandana sit in the tea, the darker the shade it would give.

It was our first time experimenting with this art and we look forward to doing it more often with different types of materials.

Thank you for coming up with this activity, Annie. ❤️

We had the most fun time harvesting for, cooking, and enjoying eating Indian dishes today. 🥔🍅🫑

We cooked street-style Pav Bhaji, Bhaji Rice, and Scrambled Paneer. The youth couldn't be more excited to try them.

We also prepared a dessert that we're going to have with Pizza tomorrow 😁
