Charles “Junior” Gascich passed away on June 8th 2026. Born on January 8th 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri to Charles Raymond and Janice Elizabeth Gascich, Charlie was the one and only boy, “the prince.” A graduate of St. Pius X High School, from there he went on to MU as well as Friends University.

Charlie was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and cousin. He was a doting father to his twin girls, and adopted father and grandpa to many of the Whatsoever Community Center kids.

Charlie was a strong, reliable, kind, & funny man who dedicated 32 years to the Whatsoever Community Center and the families therein. From his initial hiring as a part-time Athletic Director, Charlie's dedication to the students & their families allowed him to shine, being appointed as Whatsoever’s Executive Director in 2004.

With Charlie at the helm, Whatsoever Community Center grew and adapted their services in order to better serve the Northeast and Sheffield communities.
Charlie's leadership played a vital role in the growth and transformation of Whatsoever Community Center. Through his unwavering commitment, he helped shape a stronger center and a stronger community. His compassion and servant's heart will remain an enduring part of Whatsoever Community Center for generations to come.

Charlie was the life of every party. He was the first one to crack a joke to make you smile. There wasn’t a dance floor he didn’t like. He cheered proudly for Mizzou, the Royals, and the Chiefs, sometimes a little too much, and sometimes a little too passionately. In rougher seasons he had several thoughts he would often share with the coaches. Charlie loved the outdoors, and spending time with the ones he loved, especially his daughters Sophie and Aleese. He looked forward to the Croatian golf tournament every year and made an impression on everyone he met with his quick wit, and dry sense of humor.

Charlie was proceeded in death by his father Charles, his mother Janice Gascich, and his sister Janet (Sissy).

He is survived by sisters Patricia Canning and husband Rich, sister Sherrie, niece Connie and Nephew Matt, niece Stephanie Hall, his two beloved daughters Sophie Elizabeth and Aleese Lynn Gascich who had his entire heart, and his most loyal companion Queenie the dog.

A celebration of life for Charlie will be held October 24th from 5-8pm at Monachino Hall at St. Pius X High School. 1400 NE 44th St Kansas City, MO 64116.

We were honored Friday when Sandy Hess (Johnston) stopped by to get a look at all of our ongoing improvements at the center. After seeing all of the social media posts on our progress and improvements, she made the call and came by to check things out.

Sandy lived at 1238 Ewing, right down the street in the late 1940’s and very fondly remembers her experiences at WCC, including the great lollipop caper of 1948. This involved a jar of suckers in one of the clinic rooms that were on the second floor of our main building and the curiosity of a group of girls who decided to go exploring.

While going through some of our oldest pictures, she spotted herself with her old “gang.” You can’t imagine the excitement when Sandy pointed at the picture with an elated “THAT’S ME,” pointing to her image in the snapshot. She remembered everyone in the picture – including Elmer the dog.

Sandy’s takeaway: “Every neighborhood deserves a place like this, in their community where kids can go to just be happy. That’s so important and why I loved it here at Whatsoever.”

Before leaving, Sandy pointed out where a number of families used to live on Ewing, noting their addresses. The corner market has long since been converted to a duplex but Sandy remembered getting lunch for a dime that included a bologna sandwich, a can of pop and a bag of Fritos, all for about a dime.

Thank you Sandy and John for sharing your day and your memories with us, especially the lollipop story. We look forward to keeping in touch and having you back for a follow up visit.

Estamos buscando voluntarios para el
¡Mes de octubre! Si puedes echarnos una mano con antes del evento; configurar/decorar, durante el evento; con los juegos, repartir dulces o ser un actor de miedo como parte de la casa de espantos y después del evento; con el derribo/limpieza. Además, buscamos voluntarios que deseen hacer maquillaje para los actores de miedo y/o puedan hacer pintar caritas.

🎃 Volunteers Needed!! 👻

We're looking for volunteers for the whole
month of October! If you can lend a hand with the BEFORE the event; setup/decorating, DURING the event; with the games, handing out candy or be a scare actor as part of the haunted house and AFTER the event; with the tearing down/cleanup. Also, looking for any volunteers that would like to do makeup for the scare actors and/or can do facepainting.

Anyone interested in helping in the evenings or high school kids looking do to community service hours, you can come help Tuesdays/ Thursdays 5-8pm.

Whatsoever Community Center's 5th annual Halloween Haunt event is Friday, Oct. 23rd from 5-7pm and Saturday, Oct. 24th from 5-8pm. We will have our haunted house, games, trick or treating plus more fun activities! Come and join us with your families to have a fun time on both days!!

La quinta edición anual del evento «Halloween Haunt» del Whatsoever Community Center va ser el viernes 23 de octubre, de 5pm a 7pm, y el sábado 24 de octubre, de 5pm a 8pm. ¡Tendremos nuestra casa de espantos, juegos, trick-or-treating (dulces) y muchas más actividades divertidas! ¡Vengan a pasar un rato divertido con su familia ambos días!

Greetings!
Whatsoever Community Center, through our community partners at Urban Produce Push are here to help our neighbors who are food insecure,
we have a variety of breads, bagels and english muffins as well as some packaged fruit (watermelon and grapes) and bananas.

We will have our center open this afternoon, Friday 10/2 from noon until 4pm for those who want to stop by and stock your pantry with these staples.
If you are in need of bread and fruit, please come by this afternoon. These are free to our neighbors and community.
