Our final installment of our Community Conversation series is here! 🎥

Join featured artist Emiliano Zapata as he discusses the symbolism behind his featured piece entitled, "Chucho and the Flood Plain". His work explores time, memory, and the spaces in between. Inspired by the monarca butterflies, marigolds, and the powerful connection we share with our animal companions, this piece imagines our beloved dogs guiding us back to those we’ve lost. After recently losing their own dog Bruce, the artist created this work as an ode to that bond—and to the idea that our pets are family, too.

🥗🍳 Healthy cooking, healthy choices, and community!

On September 16, our Public Health team kicked off our Healthy Cooking Class series in partnership with University Health and UnitedHealthcare! 💚

This three-week series gives seniors the opportunity to cook hands-on, learn practical nutrition tips, and discover simple techniques they can use at home. After each class, participants also take home a fresh bag of produce to recreate the recipe themselves! 🥕🥦

For Week 1, participants prepared a Santa Fe Breakfast Bowl while learning about cholesterol mindfulness and foods that can support healthy cholesterol levels.
Here’s to making healthy choices delicious, accessible, and fun! 👏

🎥 COMMUNITY CONVERSATION | PART 2 OF 3
In Part 2, Christina Loya continues her conversation with featured artist and Kansas City native Emiliano Zapata.

Featured artist and Kansas City native Emiliano Zapata discusses his growth as an artist and Mattie Rhodes’ fundamental role in helping to shape him and his emerging career as an artist. He discusses how Mattie Rhodes provided an outlet and the tools he needed to begin showcasing his work at other venues, and how it continues to do the same for other emerging artists as well.

He also discusses his artist collective, M.A.S.A. — Migrating Assembly for Stories and Art — and their current exhibit, Semi-Lucid, at the Leedy-Voulkas Art Center, on display through September 25th.
