Tomorrow on Thursday May 21st, we are having our featured artist Cruz Martinez host a workshop on how to make a tattoo flash design. He will be walking his class through step by step on how to create a traditional tattoo design using watercolor paper, black India ink, and watercolor. You’ll notice some examples on the flyer.

Come hang out with us and create some cool designs with other local artists. Proceeds go back to the Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center to keep hosting more workshops and portions also go to our local artist Cruz Martinez.

We are so honored to share that, last week, U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver presented Mattie Rhodes with $1,031,000 in Community Project Funding to expand our community-based violence intervention and prevention efforts across Kansas City.

This investment will strengthen our violence interruption programming, youth engagement, and culturally responsive outreach; work that is rooted in building trust, reducing violence, and supporting long-term community health.

For more than 130 years, Mattie Rhodes has stood alongside families across Kansas City, responding to community needs and working to create safety, stability, and opportunity. We’re grateful for this support and the continued partnership to invest in stronger, safer neighborhoods for all.

Yesterday, members of the Mattie Rhodes team traveled to Jefferson City during the final week of legislative session to connect with state leaders and advocate for the communities we serve.
A special thank you to State Representative Wick Thomas for helping make our visit meaningful and impactful. We also appreciated the opportunity to connect with State Senators Patty Lewis, Maggie Nurrenbern and Barbara Washington, as well as State Representative Pattie Mansur.

We are grateful for these conversations and for the continued partnership as we work to strengthen our communities, elevate local needs, and identify opportunities to better align state resources with the people and families we serve.
