Yesterday was the first day back to school for Kansas City Public Schools! We’re excited to welcome back our incredible Mattie Rhodes In Schools team as they begin another year of supporting, inspiring, and empowering students and families across Kansas City. ❤️

As CXLTURA comes to an end, we wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes look through the perspective of one of our featured artists, Tyson, also known as 𝕱𝖗𝖊𝖊🔱🇵🇸

In this interview, Tyson gives us a glimpse into his experience creating for CXLTURA and shares what it was like working alongside the Mattie Rhodes team. From the creative process to the experience of bringing his work into the exhibition, he gives us a closer look at what happens behind the scenes.

At Mattie Rhodes, it’s a privilege to work with artists like Tyson and create opportunities for their voices, stories, and creativity to be seen and experienced by our community.

We’re doing something a little different at Mattie Rhodes. We’ve had the privilege of hosting so many incredible artists and exhibitions in our gallery over the years. 
Shows like Cxltura by Zitro and Zelaznogzil have become a staple in our gallery lineup, and we love seeing our space continue to grow as a place for artists and our community to come together.

We’re hosting a traveling group exhibition curated by one of our own local artists, Liz Gonzalez, featuring 7 Mexican American muralists from across the U.S. They’ll be bringing their work to Kansas City, but they won’t just be hanging it on the walls. While they’re here, the artists will also be creating a collaborative mural at the Mattie Rhodes Ceramic Studio!
And you can come hang out with them while they paint. Watch the mural take shape, meet the artists, check out their work, and spend the evening with us.

We’ll also have a special dance performance by Grupo Folklórico Izcalli and a live DJ set by DJ Mztekcah!

Our Back-to-School Event was a huge success, and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of our community partners, volunteers, and Mattie Rhodes staff! 🙌

Thank you to everyone who donated their time, resources, energy, and heart to help local students and families start the school year off strong. From setting up and distributing school supplies to connecting families with valuable community resources, every helping hand made a difference.

We are grateful for the partnerships and people who continue to show up for our community. It truly takes a village! ❤️
