The Michigan Tri-Share program can lower child care costs by 2/3 for working parents. Kalamazoo County small businesses and nonprofits can receive reimbursement for their portion of the costs through a grant-funded project at the Early Learning Innovation Hub at Stara Collaborative

One of the action steps of Goal 3 (Support Children, Youth, and Families) of the Kalamazoo Blueprint For Peace (see: www.blueprintforpeace.org) is to strengthen coordination of how priority youth are connected to mentors.

For more than 65 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Michigan Big Brothers Big Sisters SW MI has connected young people with caring adult mentors who help them build confidence, navigate challenges, and reach their full potential.

Today, we were reminded about what collective action looks like.

Creating lasting change means looking beyond individual issues and understanding how the systems that shape our communities intersect. When partners come together across sectors, we can better identify barriers, share resources, and build solutions that strengthen families, providers, and communities.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside our partners LISC Kalamazoo Kalamazoo County Land Bank Early Childhood Investment Corporation Mission Driven Finance and Kalamazoo Child Care Coalition, share the work happening across Kalamazoo County, and continue building the relationships necessary to move toward systems-level change.

This week, Kalamazoo Blueprint for Peace Goal Working Groups came together to move shared priorities into action and continue building solutions that address the systems impacting our community.

Goal 4 Workgroup: brought partners together through the Transportation Coalition to develop coordinated strategies that address transportation barriers and strengthen access to economic opportunity.

Goal 5: focused on building a network and developing a shared plan for creating safer, more connected neighborhoods across Kalamazoo.

This is collective action in practice and collectively bringing people, organizations, and community perspectives together to move from shared goals to coordinated action and lasting systems change.

Child care should not determine whether a parent can stay in the workforce.

Stara’s newest fiscally sponsored project, the Early Learning Innovation Hub, is recruiting Kalamazoo County families for a 1-year MI TriShare pilot that can help make child care more affordable.

Through MI TriShare, the cost of child care is shared between the employee, employer and State of Michigan. For families who qualify, that means you may pay about one-third of your child care cost.

You may qualify if:
• You live in Kalamazoo County
• Your child is age 0–3
• You work for a small business with 10 or fewer employees
• You use a licensed child care provider in Kalamazoo County
• Your household income falls within the pilot range:
——- 2 people: $43,380–$86,560
——- 3 people: $54,640–$109,280
——- 4 people: $66,000–$132,000
——- 5 people: $77,360–$154,720

Affordable child care is part of what makes it possible for families to work, stay financially stable, and have real choices about what comes next.

Today, leads from the Southwest Michigan Child Care Coalition, Region 8, came together to celebrate county-level successes, talk through shared challenges, and map out where we're headed next.

The conversation focused on the goals that matter most: closing gaps in access, learning from what's working county to county, and building a strategic plan for the coming fiscal year to strengthen child care systems across our region.

Grateful for a team this committed to making quality child care a reality in Region 8!

This millage provides eight years of local funding to invest in families, child care providers, and teachers in ways that state and federal governments have not prioritized. For the past two years, the Kalamazoo Child Care Coalition, community organizations, advocates, and residents across Kalamazoo County have come together with a shared commitment: ensuring that our youth and families have the support, resources, and opportunities they deserve.

This work has been built through relationships, persistence, shared leadership, and the belief that meaningful change happens when communities act together. Every conversation, meeting, connection, and act of advocacy has helped build a growing community of leaders dedicated to creating a stronger future for children and families throughout Kalamazoo County.

To everyone who has shared their voice, offered their time, opened doors, brought people together, and continued showing up — thank you. We could not move this work forward without you.
