The Open Roads crew is proud to introduce our newest Instagram series that will highlight the awesome members of the Open Roads board! Each week, you will get the chance to ‘meet’ one of our board members. Our board works incredibly hard behind the curtain, so we are so excited to celebrate them all! Kicking off the series, we would like you to meet Paul, our board chair.
Paul is retired, but still active (not dead yet!). He is an avid bicycle rider and belongs to several bicycle organizations, including the Kalamazoo Bike Club, The Chain Gang, the League of Michigan Bicyclists, and the Maui Bicycling League, in addition to the Open Roads Bike Program. He has ridden RAGBRAI (Google it) many times, including in 2025 when he was honored to be the ‘captain’ on a tandem for a visually impaired friend, Josh Harrington. He also is an avid canoeist and has built a couple of cedar strip canoes for his own use. One time, he combined his interest in canoeing and bicycling by loading his bicycle into his canoe so he could get from the ending point on the Kalamazoo River back to the starting point to get his car. It didn’t end well – he swamped the canoe as he was trying to get out. Everything – the bike, himself, and anything else in the canoe - got soaked, but fortunately was retrieved to be used another day. But not by combining activities!
