Save the date! Hydrant flushing starts Sunday, September 13.

Crews will flush hydrants throughout the City overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, September 13 through Thursday, September 24. Some daytime flushing may also take place if needed.

Hydrant flushing helps remove naturally occurring minerals from the water system and gives crews an opportunity to check hydrants, valves, and other system components.

Flushing does not affect the safety of your drinking water, but you may notice temporary cloudiness or discoloration. If you do, run cold water in a bathtub or utility sink until it clears.

Bulk trash pickup is coming up in September!

Have furniture or other large household items that are too big for your regular trash cart? September is one of Kalamazoo’s quarterly bulk trash pickup months.

Your pickup day depends on your address. You can set out up to 7.5 cubic yards of material (about a pickup truck load) for collection.

Before setting anything out, check your pickup day and make sure your items are accepted:

And remember: if something is still usable, consider donating it or giving it away instead. Bulk trash goes directly to the landfill.

The Kalamazoo Farmers Market is kicking off the last summer Kid’s Market with a Carnival just for kids. It’s totally free to attend, play games and win prizes. Bring your wallets and cash for buying amazing things that kids have made as part of their summer business. There are nearly 30 kids booths offering jewelry, books, handmade items, and even great smoothies. The Kid’s Market is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At 11 a.m. the Carnival opens with competitive games where you can win tickets that can be redeemed at the Prize Redemption Center. It’s all free, but prizes are limited so come early to win and redeem.

The tickets are earned through playing games, and everyday math is used to figure out what you can buy with your free tickets (that you won at the game).

It’s all right around the corner in the Edison Neighborhood at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market (1204 Bank Street).

Make sure to bring an adult because they just might try to win a few tickets, our prizes are that good. It’s all brought to you by the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation and KELC Events.
