What's in a name?
For U.S. golf facilities, quite a bit. Some words show up far more than others, with Hills appearing in 800+ facility names.

Surfacing patterns like these is the fun side of the NGF Facilities Database. The same data helps golf businesses size markets, benchmark competitors and plan with confidence.

Look around and you'll notice major sporting goods retailers dedicating significant floor space to golf simulator showrooms, a strong indication of how much simulator and screen golf participation continues to grow.

The data that the NGF has been fastidiously tracking and reporting on confirms it: simulator use has more than doubled over the past five years, the most significant growth of any off-course form of the game.

What's shifted in 2025 isn't just the volume, it's the profile of who's playing, and what they're doing with it afterward.

Just down the road from us, PGA National Resort has completed the renovation and rebrand of its former Estates Course, reopening it as Triple Stick Golf Club, a new members-only golf experience. The name honors World Golf Hall of Fame member Davis Love III and his firm, Love Golf Design , who led the redesign alongside a new clubhouse from Peacock + Lewis Architects and Planners, LLC . Drawing on Pete Dye's love of quirky, characterful design, the course brings bold, distinctive holes full of personality, suited perfectly to South Florida's landscape. We're excited to see this iconic property evolve right here in our own backyard.

Yet another gem we've found buried in one of the MANY boxes we've been rummaging through this week...

Twenty-five years after the National Golf Foundation was born, one of our early leaders got this invitation to MacGregor's Tourney Press Club Premiere, a party thrown the night before the 1961 U.S. Open at Oakland Hills Country Club in Birmingham, Michigan.

A young Jack Nicklaus, still an amateur, tied for 4th in that tournament.
He'd sign with MacGregor before the year was out.
(NGF was founded in 1936 when six equipment giants, including a then-struggling MacGregor Golf, pooled $17,000 to protect the game from the Great Depression.)

We really hope whoever got this invite showed up - what a party that must have been (and we hope this individual depicted here was not an accurate representation of most of those covering golf at the time!).

Women aren't just growing their presence on the course.

Among Americans who play golf exclusively at driving ranges and venues like , , and women are a far larger share of off-course players at 42%, 8 points above their 34% share of all golfers. These grassless, socially-driven venues are an effective on-ramp to the traditional game, generating what we at the NGF term "Latent Demand" among non-golfers. Introductions and trials through these added pathways are helping to further diversify the participant base, and the opportunity ahead is significant!

⛳Kawonu Golf Club, Greenville, S.C.

Kawonu GC has completed grassing across all 18 holes of its championship course, bringing major course construction to a close as the private, golf-only club moves toward its spring 2027 opening.

Designed by architect Andrew Green, Kawonu is one of as many as eight new courses that could open in South Carolina in 2027, according to NGF’s Construction Report. South Carolina is the third-most active state in new golf development, trailing only Florida and Texas.

Today is International Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day, and is closing in on its 100th anniversary this September 13.
Herb Graffis, who co-founded the National Golf Foundation in 1936, was already making this case back then: keeping a course in shape takes real expertise, not just muscle. This photo from the proves the point from a different angle, a USGA grass specialist testing an experimental turf dye with the USDA in 1938.
Ninety years later, the job has only gotten more complex. Thank you to every superintendent and their crew keeping courses playable today and every day.
