If you watch KHOU this morning you might have seen some familiar faces. Avenue was blessed with the opportunity to be featured on Great Day Houston segment with Deborah Duncan.

CEO Mary Lawler and Chief Strategy Office Nicole Cassier did a great job educating TV audiences about Houston's growing housing crisis and explaining what Avenue is providing affordable housing and supportive services to working Houston families.

One quote from the segment that really stuck out is when Mary said

" the cost of rent has increased something like $300 a month just in a few years. When you think of a family who's earning $3,000 a month and they're paying half of their income toward rent, it doesn't leave anything left.... to pay for utilities, groceries and transportation and all that type of stuff."

They also discussed the incredible opportunity Avenue has right now to raise a $70,000 match campaign that can turn into $140,000 from two generous donors.

They discussed the growing challenges surrounding affordable housing in Houston through the lens of Avenue’s Independence Hall project. Ms. Helena has lived at Avenue on 34th since the doors opened. She was the third resident to move in.

We asked why the pop-up markets matter to her. Her answer was plain: they land in between money, and the food is healthy.
