We’re proud to partner with Pasadena ISD and the Pasadena Education Foundation to support our youngest learners! 💙

This spring, the Education Foundation of Harris County (EFHC), the nonprofit arm of Harris County Department of Education (HCDE), awarded Pasadena ISD an $8,209 Partners in Education Grant for Wiggle, Wonder and Learn: A Whole Body Adventure for Pre-K 3.

The grant will provide Pre-K3 students with hands-on, movement-based learning tools that support early academic skills, social-emotional growth, physical development, and learning through whole-body movement.

This was one of 12 grants selected and awarded by the EFHC Board this spring, and we’re excited to see this investment in action!

Thank you, Pasadena ISD, for putting this grant to work for our youngest learners. We’re grateful to be part of the work helping students build strong foundations for lifelong success.

Thank you to the Harris County Department of Education for their generous donation! These funds will provide our Pre-K 3 students with the tools needed to learn through whole-body movement, creating engaging experiences that support lifelong learning and development.

Last summer, we had the privilege of celebrating Hillcrest Charles, a 2025 EFHC Scholar and graduate of Impact Early College High School in Goose Creek CISD. His smile, positive energy, and bright outlook made him unforgettable to everyone who attended our 2025 Scholarship Celebration.

So, when EFHC Director Trina Silva had the opportunity to catch up with Hillcrest and hear how things have been going, we knew we had to share his update!

Today, Hillcrest is taking classes part-time at Lee College as he prepares to transfer to the University of Houston's Bauer College of Business. He is also working full-time at Community Resource Credit Union, where he was recently recognized for his outstanding contributions!

But Hillcrest’s journey since receiving his scholarship has not been without challenges. Just days before receiving his scholarship last summer, Hillcrest lost his brother, while his mother was recovering from an accident involving an 18-wheeler. The scholarship arrived during an incredibly difficult season for his family.

Hillcrest shared that the scholarship helped him pay for classes at Lee College, make needed repairs to his car so he could get to work and school, and help with additional expenses for his family during that difficult time.

Through it all, Hillcrest’s positivity and light never seemed to falter. He continues to work toward his goals, plans to keep working while pursuing his bachelor’s degree, and is excited about what comes next.

We are so proud to see where his journey is taking him and grateful that EFHC could be part of his story. Hillcrest, we can't wait to see what you accomplish next!

🎨 From Houston to New York City!

Cypress Falls High School senior Hasan Alwaeli earned a National Gold Medal in Art through the 2026 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for his incredible graphic design piece, Under Construction.

After competing among nearly 14,000 submissions from students across Harris, Galveston and Fort Bend counties, Hasan earned a regional Gold Key and advanced to the national competition—ultimately earning one of the program’s prestigious National Gold Medals.

His achievement also earned him an invitation to New York City to celebrate alongside some of the nation’s most talented young artists and writers.

The Education Foundation of Harris County was proud to help offset expenses associated with Hasan’s trip, helping ease the financial burden on his family and making it possible for him to experience this incredible milestone.

Because sometimes supporting students means more than recognizing their accomplishments. It means helping them fully experience the opportunities they’ve worked so hard to earn. 💙

This fall, Hasan will attend Texas A&M University - Galveston, where he plans to major in marine biology. We can’t wait to see where his creativity, curiosity and talent take him next!

🚗 Meet 2026 EFHC Scholar Kenny Rivas Portillo, representing Sharpstown High School in Houston ISD.

For Kenny, success means more than reaching his own goals—it means creating a better future for his family and giving back to his community.

Throughout high school, Kenny has balanced academics, athletics, and family responsibilities while remaining focused on his future. As a talented soccer player at Sharpstown High School, he has learned the value of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities that continue to shape the way he approaches his education and career goals.

Kenny understands the importance of hard work and sacrifice. Rather than allowing challenges to stand in his way, he has remained determined to pursue his passion for automotive technology and create new opportunities for himself, his family, and his community.

"This scholarship will help me with the lack of money. It will be very beneficial to me because of the sacrifice and hard work that has to be done. Adding on to that, I can focus more on my academics and work time for my career." — Kenny

This fall, Kenny will attend Houston City College to study Automotive Technology. His long-term goal is to become a skilled automotive technician and one day open his own auto repair business, creating a place where he can serve his community and inspire others.

🔧 Meet 2026 EFHC Scholar Reynaldo “Rey” Chuvac, representing Sharpstown High School in Houston Independent School District .

For Rey, the future is not just something he hopes for—it is something he has been actively building.

Growing up in a family of six taught Rey the importance of hard work, responsibility, and supporting the people you love. While balancing academics and working to help support his family, Rey remained focused on his goals and made the decision to graduate high school one year early so he could begin his journey toward a career in the skilled trades.

Rey’s passion for HVAC began while working alongside his uncle in the field, where he discovered the pride that comes from using his skills to help others. That experience inspired him to pursue a future where he can build a successful career, provide for his family, and one day open his own HVAC business.

"Receiving this $2,500 scholarship is an incredible milestone that truly eases my financial burden, empowering me to channel 100% of my focus and energy into my education!" — Rey

This fall, Rey will attend Houston City College to study HVAC Technology and take the next step toward becoming a certified HVAC technician.
