Aloha Harvest

Aloha Harvest Rescuing Quality Food to Nourish and Strengthen Our Community since 1999. Aloha Harvest is the largest food rescue nonprofit in the state of Hawaiʻi.

Seven days a week, free of charge and free of liability, we rescue quality excess food from donors (ex: wholesale distributors, grocery stores, restaurants, hotels) and redistribute it to recipient agencies feeding the hungry (ex: homeless shelters, social services, food pantries). We have been doing this work for over 21 years and represent the largest and most successful collaboration between bu

sinesses and nonprofits in the state. In 2020, we worked with 360 food donors and 273 recipient agencies to redistribute over 2.7 million pounds of good food that would have otherwise been wasted! This work is essential because even while 1 in 5 people in Hawaiʻi rely on food pantries for assistance, about 26% of the local food supply (237,000 tons of good food) is wasted annually. We are based on and currently only serve Oʻahu.

🌟 Volunteer of the Month: Welli 🌟

This month, we’re proud to recognize Welli, a longtime supporter of Aloha Harvest whose passion for reducing food waste and fighting food insecurity has inspired her to take action through our Kailua Farmers Market food rescue.

When asked what motivates her to volunteer, she shared:

“I love the mission of Aloha Harvest because I’m equally distressed by wastefulness and food insecurity. While I’ve donated money to Aloha Harvest for several years, I wasn’t able to do much volunteering because I work full-time. The Kailua Farmers Market food rescue is perfect for me because it takes place on weekends and is only a few minutes from my home. I’ve also really enjoyed meeting the other volunteers.”

Mahalo, Welli, for your compassion, dedication, and the time you give to help ensure good food nourishes our community instead of going to waste. 💚

🌟 May Volunteer of the Month: Kelly 🌟

Since joining our volunteer team, Kelly has helped rescue fresh produce through community harvests, helping ensure locally grown produce reaches our community instead of going to waste. She was also part of our Harvesting Aloha Cohort, helping raise funds and awareness to support Aloha Harvest’s mission.

Here’s what she has to say:

“I started with you because a neighbor had a loaded calamansi tree dropping ripe fruit, that was going to waste. The tree owner was not able to harvest it herself & was grateful for the help.” 🍊

Kelly shared that volunteering with Aloha Harvest reminded her of her own experiences growing up and reinforced the importance of fresh food and community support.

“In high school (Roosevelt) I didn’t have lunch at times & ate star fruit from a tree in the school neighborhood. It saved me & made me appreciate what AH does.”

Mahalo, Kelly, for bringing care and compassion to every harvest. We’re so grateful to have you as part of the Aloha Harvest ʻohana 🌱💚

🇺🇸 In the U.S. alone, up to 40% of our food supply goes uneaten

The good news? Small changes at home can make a BIG impact. From planning meals to storing food properly, we all have the power to waste less and feed more.

🌟 April Volunteer of the Month: Keline with the Watrrs Group 🌟

🌎 This Earth Day, we’re highlighting the impact of food rescue and the people who make it possible. In the U.S., nearly 1/3 of all food goes to waste, making it the #1 material in our landfills and a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Last month, Keline with the Watrrs Group dedicated 100 hours as a food rescue driver—rescuing surplus food from McDonald’s locations, a local bakery, and a farmers market, helping ensure good food feeds people, not landfills.

Here is what she has to say:

“We started volunteering to rescue food to bring to those that were in need and we enjoy it. We wanted to do something for the communities and helping people is the true connection and purpose of the WATRRS GROUP.”

Mahalo, Keline and the WATRRS Group, for the care and dedication you bring to our community through food rescue. 🌱💚
