The fifth post in our series.

We thought this was a good image to share, and a good reminder of all the ways we are often hardest on ourselves. Be kind to yourselves. Have grace for yourselves.

Mahalo to Mental Health America of Hawaii for sharing the image.

The third in our series.

It is quite often that the elderly, especially those that live alone or are otherwise isolated, struggle with mental health more than most people realize. Make an extra effort to check on your loved ones, your neighbors, and your friends. This not only helps them to not feel alone, but it will allow you to monitor for any concerning symptoms related to mental health and wellness.

This is the first in a series of posts, recognizing that May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We've been thinking about what to share, and the first thing we thought of is all the ways that well-meaning/well-intentioned, good-hearted people can misstep when trying to help a family member, friend, or colleague who is struggling with their mental health.

This is particularly true when the diagnosis is not publicly considered "serious" or as visible as someone struggling with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc. When you have challenges that can sometimes be masked, the danger is real and can increase the risk of harm to self or others - this includes depression (in all its forms), anxiety (in all its forms), eating disorders, PTSD, and many more.

Important things to consider, pay attention to, and be mindful of. One of the foundation's areas of focus looks at the needs of women and girls who are at-risk (for a variety of reasons).

Autism rates in girls have steadily risen in recent years. But as more women are diagnosed in adulthood, some wonder how many girls are still missed.

This report highlights some of the reasons why we believe supporting the arts & culture community is essential.

We believe in the power of art to change lives. This report highlights how the arts & culture sector significantly impacts the economies of the communities in which they exist. We encourage you to not only read this article but to click on the links that direct you to the information on arts.gov. There is a treasure trove of data available, including for Hawaii.

One of the foundation's areas of focus is supporting the needs of women and girls who are at-risk and struggling with a variety of life challenges. This article in the Washington Post highlights the ways in which our girls are in crisis. It also mentions some of the very basic ways that adults can support them - don't judge, don't minimize and attribute things to normal teenage drama, listen, believe, and work hard to see them for who they are not who we want them to be.

Stark findings on the pervasive sadness, suicidal thoughts and sexual violence endured by teen girls have jolted parents and the wider public.

Our Story

The H.T. Hayashi Foundation was founded in 2005, in honor of Herbert Takami “H.T.” Hayashi after he passed in November of that year. He was a developer and hotelier here in Hawaii and Hawaii’s first Japanese American hotel developer.

He believed strongly that education was the way to a better life, that working hard was important in anything we do, and that spending time to counsel and mentor youth and young adults was important. He raised his children to believe in a set of core family values which had at its center, humility and the importance of a humble life no matter your wealth or status.

In 2018 the Foundation began the journey of solidifying its Mission, Guiding Principles, and its Action Strategy. In 2019 it took a second big step in that direction, by bringing on its first employee, a new Executive Director, Jan Harada. The Hayashi family and Ms. Harada are excited about the future of its effort to create lasting change and positive impact with and for the communities it cares about throughout the State of Hawaii.

The Foundation strives to support Hawaii based organizations in a manner consistent with their core family values of Love, Respect, Compassion, Humility, Courage, Perseverance, and Accountability.
