📢 NEW REPORT: Reef-Building Coral Species Face Elevated Extinction Risk 🪸
Corals are facing a faster rise in extinction risk than any other fully assessed group of species, including mammals, birds, amphibians, sharks and rays.
🔬 A new global study published in Nature Portfolio reveals that 44% of assessed reef-building coral species are threatened with extinction, up from about one-third in 2008.
Led by the IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group, with contributions from CORDIO East Africa and scientists around the world, the study reviewed the extinction risk of 892 reef-building coral species.
📌 Key findings:
🪸 340 coral species are threatened with extinction: 33 Critically Endangered, 251 Endangered and 56 Vulnerable.
🌡️ Climate change is the biggest threat, affecting more than 90% of the species at highest risk.
🌊 The study uses data collected before the extreme ocean temperatures and global coral bleaching event of 2023–2025, meaning the situation may now be even worse.
CORDIO Director and Co-Chair of the IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group, Dr. David Obura, cited the study as the most comprehensive assessment yet of coral extinction risk. He warned of growing threats to coral reefs and stressed the need to fill major gaps in what we know about coral species.
🌍 Every tenth of a degree of warming avoided matters. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions, reducing other threats to reefs and improving conservation efforts can help protect coral species and the ecosystems they support.
