Currently, 7 out of 14 sites fail to meet recreational health standards for Enterococcus, a f***l indicator bacteria.

Extremely high bacteria counts at:
South Oʻahu - Kuliʻouʻou Stream
South Oʻahu - Wailupe Beach Park

*Please note that the results on the map from the North Shore are from two weeks ago.

As always, ocean users are advised to avoid ocean water that is brown and sites that fail to meet health standards.

The Blue Water Task force is looking for volunteers, especially if you can help transport samples from the North Shore! We test Oʻahu beaches every other Sunday, but your commitment would be based on your availability - once a month, once every two months. Email Arleen at [email protected] if interested. It’s rewarding to know we are helping to keep beachgoers healthy!

Stay informed. Stay safe. And always remember to rinse!

Hawaiʻi is often viewed as paradise, with pristine aquamarine waters and world-famous beaches, but our water quality monitoring tells a different story.

Surfrider Hawaiʻi’s 2025 Hawaiʻi Water Quality Report documents chronic bacteria pollution concerns across the islands, especially near freshwater outlets and areas with high concentrations of cesspools.

24 out of 90 sampling sites across Kauaʻi, Oʻahu and Maui exceeded recreational health standards for f***l indicator bacteria in more than 50% of samples taken in 2025.

These slides highlight four Hawaiʻi beach bacteria hot spots identified through our Blue Water Task Force monitoring program.

The report explores:
• Data summaries for Kauaʻi, Maui, and Oʻahu
• Key findings and bacteria hot spots
• Efforts to address cesspool pollution and strengthen wastewater pollution permits
• How to protect your health at the beach
• Nature-based solutions for clean water

Join Surfrider in our efforts to advocate for clean water and healthy beaches, because no one should have to worry about getting sick at the beach.

🌊 MAHALO NUI LOA! 🌊 We are sooo thankful after Sunday’s Ocean Friendly Garden Workday - a massive thank you to every single volunteer who dedicated their time, energy, and good vibes to malama our space.

A special shoutout to our incredible partners at Hawai’i Green Growth () for showing up big and working alongside us to make a lasting impact! 🙌💚

Here is a look at what these amazing volunteers accomplished:
🧹 Cleared & Cleaned: The gathering area and storm drains are completely free of debris, helping protect our ocean from runoff.
🛠️ Rebuilt: Our community sink got a much-needed overhaul and is looking better than ever.
🌸 Prepped: The container area is officially ready for our upcoming Plumeria Exchange!
✨ Beautified: The entire space got some serious TLC and is looking absolutely beautiful.

Our Ocean Friendly Garden thrives because of collective community power, and Sunday was a perfect example of what we can achieve together.
