The Homer Harbor Expansion Draft Feasibility Report is out — and the 30-day public comment period is now open!

Homer Harbor has long faced chronic overcrowding and navigational safety challenges. This US Army Corps of Engineers study examined potential solutions and recommends a path forward.

The public comment period is the official opportunity to review the study's findings and comment to the US Army Corps of Engineers before the study is finalized. Are there operational, environmental or design factors the USACE should consider that aren't reflected in the report? Will it meet the need? All comments welcome! Deadline: June 22nd.

📌Pro tip #1: The report is lengthy, but the executive summary provides a concise overview of the findings and recommended plan, while the appendices provide supporting data for those who want to dig deeper.

📌Pro tip #2: The report presents a recommendation, not a construction commitment.

NMFS announces endangered species listing is not warranted for Chinook in Gulf of Alaska. Alaska Department of Fish & Game Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang emphasized that biological indicators cited in the petition were grossly inadequate to support an ESA listing. “Failing to meet an escapement goal is not evidence that a stock is at risk of extinction; rather it is a proactive management trigger to ensure stocks are not overfished,” Commissioner Vincent-Lang said. “Alaska takes the decline in Chinook abundance very seriously. That is why we have taken significant management actions to reduce harvest and have invested heavily in research to better understand the causes of reduced productivity of these stocks.”
