The Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges and Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, welcome locals, Alaskans, Outsiders, and of course, shorebirds back to Kachemak Bay every year to mark this favorite spring-time celebration. Our Festival continues to be a homegrown success in its 30th year because of local involvement, protected lands, and passionate birders like you. This year was a banner year for the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, with a record number of attendees and a record number of Junior and Teen Birders!

The Junior and Teen Birder program was made possible this year through the generosity of the Homer Foundation, who provided an amazing grant which allowed us to purchase supplies and prizes for the Junior Birder program like binders, bird books, legos, and more.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival!!! Despite the weather (even snow on Sat), the birding was great! Ok, maybe this is a strange claim to fame, but Iā€™m pretty sure this is the one-and-only Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival field trip group who got to visit the dead humpback whale in Seldovia! Thanks to Jerry (pictured here on the right) who specifically requested, ā€œI want to see it. And smell it.ā€ We didnā€™t get close enough for smelling, and also didnā€™t want to get in the way of the biologistsā€™ necropsy, but we did get a good look.
Lots of bird activity out there, too! Ravens and eagles just waiting for the feast to begin.
